Project Summary
St Paul’s Church in Wales Primary School and Szent Miklos Gorogkatolikus Altalanos Iskola es Alapfoku Muveszeti Iskola seek to collaborate on the project Developing critical thinking skills in bilingual learners through Digital Technology and Lego.
Both schools operate within areas of social and economic depravation. Learners come from a range of religious and cultural backgrounds, with bilingualism a key factor for both schools. They are similar in their faith/religious backgrounds but differ in size with 210 and 671 learners respectively. Approximately 120 learners will be directly involved with the project at St Paul’s with all learners involved indirectly. Approximately 500 learners will be directly involved with the project at Szent Miklos Gorogkatolikus Altalanos Iskola es Alapfoku Muveszeti Iskola with all learners involved indirectly.
The project seeks to develop basic skills in Literacy, Numeracy and Critical Thinking, with emphasis placed upon the use of Digital Technology and Lego to enhance these three areas. Attitudes to learning will be challenged, with research and introduction of Growth Mindset practices to develop confidence and independence in learners at both schools. Teachers will carry out action research within their own classrooms, measuring attitudes to learning in order to assess the impact of Growth Mindset principles and the success of shared pedagogy, methodology and best practice.
We anticipate that attitudes to learning will improve over the duration of the project. Learners will become more independent when approaching activities requiring critical thought, problem solving and reasoning. We further anticipate that teachers will benefit from the action research carried out, with changes made to pedagogy and methodology employed within the classroom. Teachers will develop professionally due to the planned opportunities for sharing best practice and through the dissemination of the project.
All those involved with the project will reap long term benefits from the activities planned. Learners through strategies learnt through Growth Mindset and the development of their basic skills and Teachers through the opportunities for the sharing of pedagogy, methodology and best practice.
