Project Summary

The music sector all over Africa is going through a process of radical change, old rural methods for the oral transmission of culture are breaking down through migration to cities. Music traditions are endangered and cannot be transmitted because they have not been properly transcribed and documented and there is a serious lack of curricula as well as of teachers. The institutions seeking to address these issues lack the general business, entrepreneurial and networking skills needed to develop sustainably in the music business and education value chain. This project, comprising the applicant and 6 partners, 1 from Europe, 4 from East Africa, 1 from West Africa aims to address this situation. It draws on experiences and insights gained through various bi- and multilateral cooperative training and research activities amongst the partners over the past 8 years. In its essence it envisages 3 joint capacity building actions involving the management of the partner organizations, representatives (training providers) of the local business community and youth workers (through mobility training) to professionalise the youth organizations facilitating their entry into local markets and enhancing their standing the music industry value chain. The project will build the organisations’ capacity to:• develop effective locally anchored businesses, including social entrepreneurship • raise funds • set up strategic partnerships with stakeholders • effectively advocate and network locally, regionally internationally• develop / implement non-formal training/teaching methods, including curriculum for non-formal learning • empower youth workers to engage in local/interregional markets/networks To meet these objectives, the project will undertake the following core activities:• 2 music training campuses focussing on non-formal teaching methods for 45 participants• 2 business development workshops for 18 participants• 6 advocacy forums in all partner and programme countries• 2 concerts to ensure the visibility of the project and to reach a wide public• Development /revision of curricula and learning/teaching material including training videosThe experience-driven and peer-learning approach will address young people lacking access to the formal education sector. The envisaged curriculum as a core result and the qualification accredited nationally will allow the partners to develop sustainable programs. Using the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) as the central curriculum development tool will enable cooperation and exchange with non-formal and formal education institutions in Europe. The quality of musicianship will increase dramatically, creating opportunities to market artists, develop new markets and improve employment chances.
