Project Summary

This project was created as a result of the enthusiasm and diligence of two classes of students, one in Spain and one in Austria, who had proven themselves to be open-minded and motivated. They wanted to learn language in a setting that was more natural than in school and this project gave them the opportunity to do exactly that.

The main aim of this project was to educate and inform all the participants about Intercultural Education. Students were given the chance to understand the value of a good education in an international language for their future lives. They became more open-minded by meeting European students in a real and motivating context. In a way, the teachers promoted the European way of thinking and they helped their students with the development of their digital citizenship. At the same time the students improved their English communication and socio-linguistic skills.

22 Austrian and 19 Spanish students, accompanied by their teachers, participated in this project. All of the students proved themselves trustworthy and responsible workers and they were enthusiastic and attentive in their project work. They became more self-reliant, better at organising their problem solving processes and they worked well in a social context.

The activities of the project included workshops and online meetings, research in their surrounding and in public institutions. The students worked in groups throughout the project, which greatly encouraged constant collaboration between the participants from the two countries. The students collected data and personal reflections, compared them in their groups and produced a portfolio about their realisations in the form of stories. They creatively displayed what they learned in presentations using different types of medial communication.

The results of the project were the presentations of the groups showing the students’ progresses and depicting their research methods. A portfolio of stories was completed with realisations and reactions of the students, based on both their research as well as their day-to-day interaction with the participants and other people in the participants’ surrounding. The students completed a survey about their experiences and individual thoughts on the project itself and their learning progress. Since the majority of the Austrian students is already part of a new Erasmus+ project, they definitely benefitted from their experience and they positively influenced the attitude of other students who had not participated in an Erasmus+ project before by telling them about their experiences. They became more open minded, a lot of them overcame personal fears and they all got to know people their age from other countries. Thereby they learned a lot about each others’ cultures and the value of these national traits as well as the value of international connections. They became multipliers for what they learned in how they started perceiving language and European thinking.
