Project Summary

ENJOYABLE MATHS was planned as a two-year project (The project was prolonged for 6 months because of COVID pandemy) of strategic partnership of four schools from four EU countries – the Czech Republic, Iceland, Italy and Spain, starting in September 2018. These countries promised great differences in educational systems, lifestyle, culture and traditions as well as in family life and core values. All schools were aware of the fact that nowadays it is important to look for new methods, follow new trends in education, to find new ways how to prepare learning and teaching more enjoyable.
The aims of the project were to enhance basic skills, share successfully used learning and teaching methods in Maths, exchange good practices, to show what we are good at and share the experience and skills, to motivate students and teachers to give better performance, to be more willing to learn and teach and at the same time to enjoy the learning process, to increase interest in Maths, to learn to use modern ICT tools ,to discover and share new cultures, get information about other people, schools, educational systems, towns and countries, to enable students to have a face to face contact with people from abroad and see that learning English makes sense and it is a necessity for all EU citizens, to give our pupils a real opportunity to participate, cooperate in national and international teams and learn in a global and multicultural environment, to organize several Olympic Games and measure our skills and competences, to help students to become self- reliant and to be able to contribute to the project, to link English, ICT, Mathematics and cultural and social studies of four different European countries, create eBook in English full of photos, interesting tasks and activities. The project included the following main groups of participants: Students aged 11-14 from the schools (approx.200 students directly involved, 50% of these students are students with fewer opportunities), Students influenced by the project from all schools (approx.2500), Coordinator of the project from the Czech republic (1), Teachers responsible for running the project (4), Maths teachers (8-12), ICT teachers (4-6), English teachers (12-16), Teachers influenced by the project from all schools (approx.200), Other school staff (20), Managements of the schools (headmasters, accountants) (12-16), Parents, families of students, public etc.
In October 2018 there was a TEACHERS PROJECT MEETING in the Czech Republic where teachers met for the first time in order to take part in seminars in Twinspace and study Czech innovative Maths method (Hejny), and to see how the method works in practice.
During two years of the project students and teachers worked in two main different areas – Maths, Social and Cultural Activities. The Maths activities (MATHS GAMES, MATHS AND GEOMETRY AROUND US, INTERESTING COUNTING, WORD PROBLEMS, MANIPULATIVE GEOMETRY, DATES AND STATISTICS) will be organized in a logical order. At the beginning of each Maths activity students were supported with Maths vocabulary. Later the participants practised Maths tasks and problems from all schools according to the topic and prepared for Maths Olympic Games. These activities took place in classes, clubs, in Twinspace. Finally two rounds of Maths Olympic Games were organized and held (in Spain in October 2019 and in the Czech Republic in February 2020). Students measured their Maths competences.
The Social and Cultural Activities were planned in a few following steps during the whole project. They included various activities to know each other. We used different platforms for the communication..
Math, Social and Cultural Activities were linked in PLAYFUL OLYMPIC GAMES organized and held in Iceland in May 2019 where all the participants got experience in historical Maths workshops, they played interesting national board games and learnt about Vikings.
The project was planned to be crowned in Italy in May 2020 at FINAL OLYMPIC GAMES. This meeting was cancelled due to COVID restrictions.
We hope we increased interest in Maths and English, motivated other students and teachers to take part in international projects, we believe our students will be more successful at Maths and English competitions.
The results of the project have been disseminated at different school events for other students, teachers, parents, public. They are visible in Twinspace, school websites, Facebook, local press.
We created an eBook which includes various materials from all activities and it will be actively used as a methodological material for other teachers and schools.
