Project Summary

This Erasmus+ project was born from the will of two schools (Belgian and Italian) to create a school exchange partnership to enable students to put into practice their knowledge and skills of the Italian language (for the Belgian students studying Italian) and the French language (for the Italian students studying French). Sixteen students from each school will participate in this project. They will come from the 3rd, 4th and 5th years in the Italian school and from the 5th year in the Belgian school.
This project is entitled “Europe, a story of cross migrations”. The theme of this project focuses on, as its title indicates, migrations in Europe. It was chosen because the two schools are rich in a great social mix among the students as well as among the teachers. It is a broad topic; this is why the teachers have decided to specify the field of study: Belgian and Italian immigration and the links between the two countries. The aim of the project is to lead students and teachers to become aware of existing prejudices towards immigrants, the reasons, causes and consequences of migrations over time, and the history of Italian and Belgian immigration. Students will also have to reflect on North African immigration in Italy and Belgium. It will be compared with Belgian and Italian immigrations for 3 reasons: their historical and sociological similarities, the strong presence (in both schools) of students from North Africa, and consequently the participation of these students in the project. It is essential that the subject particularly affects the students in order to enable them to acquire a social conscience.
Given the current situation, it is essential to work on this topic to allow students to open up to the world and cultural differences and discover by themselves how the other school works with these differences. We want to enable them to strengthen their identity as a common European identity and we want to exchange the good practices of both schools.

This project will be supported and accompanied by teachers of history, Italian, French and philosophy and citizenship. Throughout the project, students and teachers will carry out specific activities on the one hand and common activities on the other. They will be organized according to the methodology of the flipped classroom because it puts the student at the center of learning. This methodology is, according to all the involved teachers, the most adapted to the theme and planned activities. Through analyses, research, interviews, questionnaires, and video presentations, students will develop a critical reading of the prejudices about migrants, in-depth knowledge of Belgian, Italian and North African migrations on the historical and sociological points of view, causes and consequences on the populations. In addition, thanks to mobility, students will discover the culture of the language they are studying.

The activities described have several objectives:
A) the general objectives:
– the modernization and strategic development of teaching and learning of basic and transversal skills and those specific to history, Italian, French, and citizenship education,
– the development of ICT skills through the theme of migration,
– the reinforcement of the motivation and will to lifelong learning,
– the development of awareness of the multiculturality of contemporary society and school.

B) the specific objectives of the theme:
– the knowledge and understanding of the historical and cultural background of the partners,
– knowledge and understanding of the different types of migrations, their causes and consequences,
– the development of social cohesion, intercultural dialogue and awareness of European citizenship through the theme of migration and therefore the awareness of the different links that unite Italy and Belgium.
– the awareness of the differences and similarities between Italian, Belgian and North African migrations,
– the development of interest in multilingualism in the teaching profession and the exchange of good practices.

At the end of each mobility, a final exhibition will be organized to show the work to all students of the school, parents, school staff and organizations involved in the project.
