Project Summary
‘European Citizenship and sustainable development in Spain and The Netherlands’ is an exchange of good practices carried out by two schools, one from Meppel (The Netherlands) and the other from Valencia (Spain). Before the Dutch and Spanish students can participate in the exchange program, they need to write a letter of motivation. It is important that every individual student describes which development goals they want to have during the program. The project will start in September 2020 and will last 12 months. The participants are a group of 32 students from both schools aged fifteen to seventeen, and two teachers from each school. The main activities are two different short-term exchanges, one week in Valencia and another in Meppel), in which students will share a lot of learning experiences involving art, history, geography, culture or folkore, and they will stay with a host family. There are also some project events that will take place before and after the exchange weeks. The students will work together in small groups or in pairs via skype, zoom, whatsapp.
The main objectives of the project are:
– students learn about the cultural diversity of two European countries.
– students become more aware about the effect of climate change.
– students learn about each other’s educational system.
– students develop their ability to communicate in a foreign language.
– students and teachers develop collaborative skills.
– teachers learn how the educational system works in Spain and The Netherlands.
The methodology to be used in the project is collaborative and cooperative learning. Working in small groups or in pairs, students can share strengths and also develop their weaker skills and their interpersonal skills. They also learn to deal with conflict. When cooperative groups are guided by clear objectives, students engage in numerous activities that improve their understanding of subjects explored.
With the project, we expect our students to become more aware of their European citizenship and gain acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community perspectives.
“I am not a product of my circumstances, I am the product of my decisions”
Stephen R. Covey.
With the project, we expect our students to become more aware of the effect of climate change and its effects and that the students can communicate in a foreign language.
The activities are intended to provide students with awareness and adoption of alternative, multi-faceted approaches to learning, and get analytical and problem solving skills. All these benefits will influence school life in long term because teachers and other students will benefit from these improvements after the project finishes.
