Project Summary

E-STAFF – for European Student Amateur Film Festival – is a two-year ERASMUS + School Partnership based on cultural exchange, language skills and education to cinema. This partnership gathers six European schools that are all located next to existing film festivals. It consists into producing short fictional films in English and into organizing a competition out of the students’ productions, with the creation of a European jury. Due to the Covid-19 crisis, the project was extended by 6 months.

During the time of the project, the students (12-14 years-old) prepare two short films, learn about cinema, and regularly shoot informal behind-the-scenes reports to share with their partners and establish a video correspondence, on which they can work together.

Through the film-making process, the students discover and promote the European Cultural Heritage through their own local heritage, by including it into their films. They may also participate to local film festivals and improve their knowledge of author cinema.

At school, the project implies cross-curricular working (for script-writing, picture language, education to cinema and to the media, and drama training) with an emphasis on digital tools. Outside of the school, the project requests external contributors, such as local officials and cinema professionals. Students thus give more meaning to academic studies and, being part of a wider European project, develop a sense of European citizenship.

English language is the connecting element of the project as students improve their skills through both a linguistic and a cultural exchange. The implied teachers, for their part, share with their partners to develop a network between schools and film festivals and to gradually include cinema and media education in their practice through innovative learning.

At the end of the project, each school can take advantage of the experience by developing a wide range of actions : strengthen their partnerships with festivals and with media or cinema professionals, apply for a quality label, build a related project on cultural heritage, attend to a bigger cinema competition, train teachers to new technologies and innovative learning, open a cinema class, a drama club, a media club or a European section, or finally resume an e-twinning or Erasmus+ partnership.

The ultimate goal of the project, which was restart E-STAFF each year at the EU Parliament, has been momentarily suspended due to Covid-19.

E-STAFF (Festival de Film Amateur Scolaire Européen) est un partenariat Erasmus+ de deux ans basé sur le développement des compétences linguistiques et l’éducation au cinéma à travers un échange culturel. Le projet réunit 6 écoles européennes a proximité d’un festival de cinéma et vise à produire des courts-métrages sur le thème du patrimoine culturel européen afin d’organiser une compétition entre toutes ces productions, avec la création d’un jury européen. Suite à la crise du Covid-19, le projet a été prolongé de 6 mois.

Pendant toute la durée du projet, les élèves (12-14 ans) ont préparé deux court-métrages en anglais, étudié le cinéma et filmé des reportages à partager avec leurs correspondants, mettant en place une correspondance vidéo sur laquelle ils ont parfois travaillé collaborativement.

A travers la réalisation des films, les élèves découvrent et mettent en scène le patrimoine culturel européen à travers leur patrimoine culturel local. Ils participent également à des festivals de film et développent leurs connaissances sur le cinéma d’auteur.

Dans les écoles, le projet implique un travail trans-disciplinaire (écriture, langage pictural, éducation au cinéma et aux médias, théâtre) en tirant parti des outils numériques. En dehors des écoles, le projet sollicite des partenaires extérieurs, qu’il s’agisse d’acteurs de la vie locale ou de professionnels du cinéma. Les élèves donnent plus de sens à leur parcours et développent leur citoyenneté européenne en collaborant à un projet d’envergure.

L’anglais est central, car utilisé pour participer à un échange linguistique et culturel. Les professeurs référents développent un réseau avec les écoles partenaires et les festivals de film afin d’incorporer l’éducation au cinéma dans leur pratique à travers des façons d’enseigner innovantes.

A la fin du projet, chaque école tire parti de l’expérience en développant une large gamme d’actions : renforcer les liens avec des festivals et avec des professionnels du cinéma et des médias, demander un label de qualité, monter un projet connexe sur le patrimoine, participer à une autre compétition de cinéma, développer la formation aux nouvelles technologies et à l’enseignement innovant, ouvrir une classe cinéma, un club théâtre, un club médias ou une section européenne, ou bien repartir sur un projet e-twinning ou Erasmus+.

L’objectif ultime du projet, à savoir pérenisser E-STAFF chaque année au Parlement Européen, est actuellement en sommeil à cause de la Covid-19.
