Project Summary

Context
Project between the IES José Marín de Vélez Rubio (Spain) close to the inactive volcanic Cabo de Gata Geopark with scientific, natural, cultural value and close to 35 rock shelters of Rock Art declared a World Heritage Site; the Escola Secundaria das Lajas do Pico in the Azores Islands (Portugal) located in an active volcanic area near the Do Pico volcano and a wine-growing landscape declared World Heritage; IES Villa de Firgas on the island of Gran Canaria (Spain) close to the volcanic geoparks of Lanzarote, Isla del Hierro and the La Palma volcano that erupted in September 2021; and the Istituto di Istruzione Superiore A. Ruiz de Augusta, Sicily (Italy) near the Etna volcano (1).

Objectives.
The main objective has been the development of basic and transversal competences of 60 European students aged 15 to 17 years (2), with the execution of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary tasks on the scientific, historical, economic, social and cultural knowledge of European volcanic areas . The development of basic competences in linguistic and cultural communication, carrying out the four programmed short-term exchanges of 5 students and 2 teachers from each center (3) and (4). The project has been affected by COVID-19, extending its duration to three years, allowing all the planned activities to be carried out, although in the mobility to Andalusia the institutes of Portugal and Italy have not been able to attend in person, being replaced by virtual mobility (5) .
Description of the activities carried out.
The tasks have been developed by six working groups each made up of ten students from two countries and whose final product has been the development of the project’s WEB (6), a pedagogical-scientific and cultural route and a poster-poster on volcanism of each country (7). We have worked virtually with the digital platforms Facebook (8), email, eTwinning (9) and WhatsApp, carrying out an on-site confrontation in each country with the mobility of 5 students and 2 teachers from each visiting center (10), allowing cultural immersion and use of languages. It has been in the format of a 10-day school exchange.
After participating in several European projects, it was found that many centers do not teach geology or volcanism. This gap in knowledge led us to carry out the SHORT-TERM JOINT TRAINING COURSE, with two teachers from each center participating, in which scientists, university and secondary school teachers discussed the teaching of volcanism and geology in schools in the EU. .
It was in the Canary Islands and organized by the José Marín and Villa de Firgas IES and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (11).

Long-term expected results and benefits.
The Pedagogical-Scientific and Cultural Routes (7) as a result of the research work have been presented to the school community.
In the training course for teachers, we have participated in pedagogical workshops on volcanism, laboratory analysis of the different prediction and early warning systems for eruptions, and scientific visits to various volcanoes, both active and inactive (11).
Andalusian teachers and students have collaborated in the filming of a professional TV documentary on the cave paintings of the Comarca de los Vélez, declared a world heritage site (7) and the theatricalization of the Legend of the Road has been carried out. de los Gigantes on the formation of basalt columns in a volcano in Cabo de Gata that has led to a report on the regional television Canal Sur TV (7). The pandemic has prevented this action from spreading among all the centers in the region, which is intended to be done when the health situation improves.
