Project Summary

The project,,European trees within European weather” was focused on the joint research on phenology and meteorology and exchange of experience and mutual learning in the course of scientific measurements and activities related to it. During two years, students conducted identical phenological observations and measurements of two trees: birch and oak, and measurements of selected meteorological quatities. They processed the measured values and results of observations and made conclusions from them. It assisted them to understand what the weather and climate is like in the region of partner schools and how it influenced development of specific phases of selected trees. Students also learnt about differences in meteorological and phenological research among regions of partner schools. They published the results and conclusion in booklet. Students also took photos of the researched trees and other 6 – 8 types of trees that are typical for their country. They used the photos for making calendar and videopresentations. Furthermore, students made a book called “European Trees” which contains photos and information about trees. The book also contains story, songs, legend, riddles or puzzles. While working on the book, students acquired new knowledge about the trees that can lead to further development of their interest in nature.
During the short-term exchanges of groups of students, students got acquainted with scientific measurements of nature and observations that they were unfamiliar with, test activities related to them and had discussion about climate change. They also visited interesting places in nature and institutions specializing in nature sciences and ecology. Students utilized new experiences and skills in their further nature science work.
Students communicated in English which helped them to improve their language skills. The dictionary, that students made together, increased their range of vocabulary.
Cooperation with other European schools enabled students and teachers to expand their development in the scope of nature science activities. Each school involved in the project had 3-6 teachers of nature science and English classes, and 20-30 students aged 12-16 year that worked in the project activities.
Students presented the results, findings, and implementation of the project work to their classmates, teachers, parents, and the public. This gave them access to new sources of information, supported development of positive approach to the environment and nature, and showed them possibilities of cooperation among people from different European countries. Teachers, which were not directly working on the project, can use it as an inspiration for their future line of work. Students that are not that involved in nature science activities might develop an interest in this field.
