Project Summary
Our project, EUTourism, aims to improve the level of English, particularly when interacting with others, and regarding pragmatics and interculturality, of our students who are immersed in training for the Tourism field. Furthermore, and as their cultural knowledge about the EU, and its cultural and social heritage is not adequate either, we consider that they really need to improve not only their level of English but also some key competences such as social and civic or entrepreneurship, creativity and cultural and artistic knowledge, not just for their professional future careers but in order to be the catalysts of our schools’ cultural and social daily life. Thus we have chosen the topic of tourism to be dealt with from the English language subject, so that it provides them with the chance to both acquire skills and competences in the English language, and to learn about tourism within the European Union. All the schools participating in the project share the same profile and the same needs, and everything we can do to improve these groups of students’ training will help the internationalization process of our schools. Such improvement could only occur in real interaction with other students with the same needs and focus, so that all the participating students may learn from their peers and work cooperatively, becoming both participants and users of the activities held by the other countries.Through this project, we can provide students with opportunities to train in aspects which are tailored to their needs, and no other Erasmus+ action could help us achieve the goals we have established for this project, bearing in mind the impact it will have on the educational communities of each school through the methodological approach of Service-learning
.We consider that the locally developed activities (such as organizing Tourism Fairs, campaigns to promote tourism in their places, videos showing the most important places in their regions, etc) will help our students achieve the sub goals of preparing students for internationalism, and aware of the European dimension, and of increasing selfconfidence, open-mindedness, teamwork spirit and the problem-solving skills of the students.
Furthermore, as some of these activities such as the “Survival English kit for tourist guides and animators” will be created through online cooperation in transnational groups, they will have to study EFL, focusing particularly on pragmatics and interaction, through different perspectives from the
different countries. The short-term mobilities of students will help students improve their command of the English language and of their intercultural competence, and to develop their oral communication skills, and of course to raise awareness of the incredible source of knowledge tourism is a tool for. In order to achieve this goal they’ll have to prepare workshops that they’ll put into practice during the mobilities, where they’ll teach others some aspects of their culture, and help them learn how to carry them out later on for other students at their schools (replicating the workshop they attended to).
Students will have to cooperate both locally and during the mobilities, thus getting a different perspective on diversity, and we are sure the activities carried out in the project and the products they’ll have to produce will increase their motivation. To conclude this strategic partnership may become the seed for future cooperation and even inservice training opportunities for teachers and /or students within a KA1 future project.
