Project Summary

Every Child Counts is a project that will develop children’s skills and understanding in Maths in a rich and meaningful way, through a cross-curricular approach.. The rationale behind it is that children need a secure understanding in Maths and are able to apply that knowledge across a range of different situations. We want to ensure that we are providing outstanding teaching and provision to all groups of pupils, especially vulnerable and disadvantaged learners, to ensure every child reaches their potential. In doing so, all children have enhanced life chances and we are helping to reduce the risk of students leaving school early.
Our project will give the children the opportunity to engage in Maths in a meaningful way and apply those skills in a range of settings and situations. Part of the problem both schools face is the lack of motivation to learn these skills in Maths both from children and their families. Through our project we will engage the whole school community in raising the profile of Maths and demonstrating its relevance and importance in everything we do.
Both schools have a priority to raise attainment for vulnerable and disadvantaged groups and this project will support that aim. By teaching Maths in an inspirational and engaging way, the aim is to accelerate the progress for these groups in particular to close the attainment gap.
All classes in both schools will particpate through emails, letters and penpals. The older children in the schools (11-12 year olds ) will take part in pupil exchanges. There will be a Maths focused visit while the children are on their exchange that will be the basis for work in school the following day. There will be two exchanges per year for the two years of the project – two in Hook Norton and two in Vara. This will involve 12 children and two accompanying adults on each mobility. There will also be two teacher exchanges over the two year project – one in Hook Norton and one in Vara, with two teachers on each visit. They will learn about Maths teaching in the host schools and develop collaborative working.
In addition, every class will undertake a Maths activity through a different curriculum area each term. These are: Maths through Science, PE, Computing, Art and Craft, Design Technology and Geography. These ideas will then be swapped between the partner schools.
The project dovetails with an eTwinning project focusing on Maths word level problems where children will write mathematical problems for each other to solve.
We aim to develop a greater understanding of Maths across the curriculum, improved standards in Maths, especially for disadvantaged learners, to foster a love of Maths, and to promote Maths as a route to improved life-chances for vulnerable groups in particular.
Our project will bring great benefits to all involved, by creating a climate where Maths is part of a life long learning journey, helping to give children the opportunity to improve their life-chances and increase their self-belief and ambition regardless of their starting points and backgrounds.
