Project Summary
This project was about the way we could help students to achieve a better physical and mental well being and make them aware of the impact their daily choices can have on their physical and mental condition. The participating countries were Finland, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal. All the schools are secondary schools with students aged 13-16, and all of us are interested in the overall well being of teenagers. One of the aims was to prevent students with economical or social issues from social exclusion and give them an opportunity to be a part of European students striving to lead a healthy way of life. Another aim was to give participants opportunities to make European contacts, to understand the richness of diversity of European cultures and in the same way our mutual goals to live a good life. Nowadays a good life among other things means being able to be one-self and for that you need to try to understand one-self and knowing how your doings affect your own life. We wanted on the other hand to develop their creativity but also to improve their ICT-skils.
We divided our well being project in three categories: physical exercise, healthy eating, and mental health. The project had two dimensions: the work in the meetings and then the tasks we complete between the meetings.
The activities during the meetings were very concrete and easy for the students to start using in their everyday lives, e.g. they have learned different games and physical exercises, they were introduced to Yoga and learned the recipes they have tried out at school.
Between the meetings students prepared different tasks for the meetings like videos for example on good behavior, anti-bulling and what makes you feeling good as well as surveys about their doings.
The importance of awareness was crucial. When they noticed how much the concept and reality of well being is taken into account at school, it is easier for them to start applying the new habits in their free time as well. They start seeing the importance of their habits better. We hope that the new habits will be a part of their lives now as a teenager and later in life.
We have exchanged good practices of health education and noticed some differences in policies as well as similarities. All interaction between partners and also cooperation with other groups has enriched our knowledge in this field of our project.
It was amazing for young people to see how teenagers in other countries have similar interests and problems, and to became aware of the differences as well. We believe that during the meetings also teachers got new ideas and inspiration for their work and well being.
