Project Summary
Title of the project: Biodiversity and foxes (BioFox)
Scientific and cultural project focusing on the impacts of climate change on biodiversity in Morvan and in Europe (Norway), the central theme being the modification of the habitats of red foxes and Arctic foxes.
Context:
– geographical: two schools from isolated rural environments in the heart of the Morvan Regional Park and a school from Norway in Tydal
– economic: disadvantaged with many low-qualified jobs for Morvan. A Norwegian school located in an isolated rural area
– environmental: common work around the theme “biodiversity and climate change”
Objectives:
– improve the acquisition of the skills of the common foundation of knowledge, skills and culture and fight against school dropout
Number and profiles of participants:
– two French classes (35 students), aged 13 to 14, from two schools with an unusual functioning: financially independent but with the same head and educational team. This situation makes trans-disciplinary and inter-school work easier. The project aims at strengthening this type of work
– a Norwegian class, about 13 students aged 12 and 13, from an average size town
– associated partners : scientists
Activities:
– educational scientific activities to evaluate man’s impact on changes in biodiversity and water resource
– educational cultural activities to evaluate how people feel about these changes
– educational activities to reinforce the students’ skills and knowledge
– educational activities to reinforce students and teachers’ motivation and ambition
– activities for carrying out and achieving the project: ensure steady and lasting logistics between the numerous partners and stakeholders
– project promotion and enhancement activities: create tools to organise coherent inside and outside promotion which will be lasting, clear and available to as many people as possible.
– project evaluation activities: create a system of global evaluation taking into account the global progress of the project, the chronology of the activities and how fairly distributed they will be during the project, as well as the results, the quality of their diffusion and their real impacts
Methodology:
– initiating new practices and exchanging them between european partners
Impacts:
– on the students: boosting their desire for learning, motivating them, giving them ambition for their future and making them responsible for their learning while confronting them with new practices and making them work with scientists. Making them aware of environmental issues and ready to adopt a new behaviour as “eco-citizen”
– on the teachers: boosting collaborative work between teachers of different subjects and from different cultures in order to create innovative practices.
– on the associated partners: joining a school project while working with students and teachers
– on the national and European institutions: getting to know about new experiences and practices which can be used in other countries and/or on other themes.
Expected results:
– tackling the problem of struggling students and maintaining them in the school curriculum.
– helping students to be ambitious for their future, these students not being really tolerant with the others.
– boosting cultural openness to develop tolerance and avoid racism.
– adopting scientific culture.
– developing collaborative work to make it more present and more efficient.
Possible long-term advantages:
– boosting responsible, tolerant and eco-citizen attitudes.
– highlighting Europe and its actions
