Project Summary
Mathematical skills is a key factor that affects students’ achivement both at many school areas as well as in their everyday routines and job prospects. The partner schools have been implementing various programmes over the years to tackle unsuccessful performance of an average 25% of students with poor results in mathematics and the prevention of early school leaving due to this factor.
Our project seeks to integrate maths and other subjects by the use of language, art, ICT and other school areas. This will be set within an intercultural context, not only among the students and teachers involved, but also in each school looking for ways to enrich plural points of view by the participation of students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Every activity and interaction among participants will pursue the use of ICT in digital presentations and products, communication through digital platforms, sharing and dissemination of project activities and resources, etc.
Friendly Maths aims at:
1. Fostering the students’ interest and skills in mathematics from a practical and enjoyable approach.
2. Fostering social skills in students from disadvantaged backgrounds in order to gain more self-confidence.
3. Creating teaching materials and methodologies that will be inserted in the schools curricula.
4. Improving students and teacher’s language and digital skills.
5. Involving families in school activities and cooperation in their children’s progress at school.
6. Reducing drop-outs at our schools and help students to pursue future training.
Students with fewer opportunities (from migrant backgrounds, low income families and poor results in basic skills) will benefit from this project, enabling them to participate in learning activities locally and during the exchanges of pupils.
All students in the participating schools will be able to benefit from this project and the connected eTwinning project, with a particular focus on those aged 15/16 who will be able to take part in the mobilities. These students will be chosen according to a positive discrimination that will allow pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to participate (social, cultural, economical, etc).
Project activities will be designed in connection with a wide range of applications and from challenging and gamification approaches: everyday life and professional activities, in our body, our daily routines (eating, scheduling time…), and our behaviour, health and healthy lifestyles, starting a business, cooking or altering a house, in theatre plays, TV series, video games, etc.
The partner schools are expecting their students to
1. Develop a sense of understanding and self-motivation for mathematical ideas
2. Experience personal development and strengthening of self-confidence
3. Feel satisfaction with success in solving problems
5. Take responsibilities, appreciate different ways of doing things and value mistakes as lessons
6. Get engaged in group activities and share their ideas with others
Teachers will gain a better understanding of new approaches in methodologies like gamification and creative classrooms, greater motivation in tackling low interest in students for mathematics and experience from cooperating in European programmes and sharing in an crosscultural and multidisciplinary setting.
Our schools will benefit, thus, from new ways to prevent early school leaving by considering new teaching resources and engaging materials. By targeting students from disadvantaged backgrounds, we expect to reach larger groups of students coming from migrant, low income or socially unfavorable circumstances.
