Project Summary

Our project of “commemorations to the construction (of Europe)” was the result of an observation: the duty of remembrance has been part of the practices of our school for many years through the participation of the History club in the national commemorations organized by the city of Lescar and the proximity of the Gurs internment camp. Our students work on the history of the townand of the the camp during the two world wars. Via e-twinning, students communicate with their French and European exchange students, share the past and build a common European memory.
This project aims at promoting civic involment, cooperation and the fulfillment of a transnational project. The goal is also to promote students’ autonomy and relationships between teenagers from different European cities,understanding and expressing themselves using a foreign language.
It will concern 24 students from 4th and 3rd years enrolled in the history club, having specific needs but motivated by the school subject.
During the first year, students will meet their European exchange students to understand and participate together in the commemorations. During the second year these activities will be extended and will be expanded to the birth of Europe and its construction. These objectives will be achieved through group work, the results of which will be published on a European blog and the etwinning platform and at the local level through exhibitions and the intranet. Students will continue to exchange ideas, share their points of view, have a critical look at the facts of war, expand their analysis and compare the remembrance duties.
“Commemorations to the Construction (of Europe)” is a long- term project maintaining and concretizing the duty of remembrance by the continuation of the connection beyond the project, by the possibility for teachers to acquire new skills and to exchange new teaching practices. The realisation of this project is the opportunity to promote Simin Palay school beyond the borders of Béarn and to allow students to become informed European citizens.
