Project Summary
“From the War to the Peace- Discovering our common historical and cultural Heritage” is a two years project. It refers to two different wars: the Spanish Civil War and the II World War, which despite being clearly different, linked two Mediterranean countries: Spain and Italy. Teachers of both countries want to work together to transmit a peace message to pupils. It has been though as a way to introduce the “Flipped Classroom” pedagogy, empowering students as creators and researchers of their own knowlege at the same time as they are discovering and experiencing their common past. Students can learn from the horror and suffering of soldiers and civil people, who still live (the last veterans and survivors), they can learn to avoid the mistakes of their ancerstors.
The project will be concretized in a final tangible result: a guide travel “From the War to the Peace” including three augmented reality maps placing the most important sites and events that happenend at that time in each school region. A part of this, all ceremonies, meetings with academic authorities or testimonies will be up loaded on the project web: photos, videos, literary writings or drawings created by students, some of them will form part of an exhibition during the last learning activity in Sant Adrià del Besós.
Obviously, to achieve this goal it is necessary to generate a learning environment which facilitates a real, productive and effective knowledge community, supervised by teachers, where families are integrated too. During this process studentswill develop the following values, keys skills and competences:
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL VALUES:
-Awareness of the European Citizenship, understanding more how the European Union has been created, as a response to the cruel consequences of the II World War.
-The importance of building peace and negotiation to avoid the absurd suffering caused by wars.
-Developing solidarity with refugees, who are fleeing from the war nowadays.
KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND TECHNOLOGY:
-Improving English language, because English is the project language among students and to create products.
-Improvement of technological skills: E-twining platform and Skype to prepare activities together, Moodle platform to learn or do activities for students of long-term stage.
PERSONAL AND SOCIAL KEY SKILLS AND COMPETENCES:
-Engagement and collaboration, working in team.
-Creativity efficenciency and problem solving: strategies of research, managing information…
-Critical thinking, personal growth and well being: they gain self-confidence and assertiveness developing other social skills like empathy and flexibility in unexpected situations.
-Consequently, students are learning to learn.
All activities are managed by students, according to the point of wiev that teachers are facilitators and students active individuals, who create knowledge.
There are planned three short term presencial workshops:
a-Following the Italian Memory of the Spanish Civil War and the II World War in Mallorca.
b-Following the II World War in Cassino.
c-Following the Memory of the Spanish Civil War in Catalonia.
The long term stage has a determinated goal: Italians and Spanish students together have to structure all collected information, bacilitated by their mates to create three augmented reality maps describing historical events using different technological tools as apps and digital digital platforms.
All these activities need a good online interaction and most of them are though as combined activities. For this reason we plan to use E-Twining and/or Skype and Moodle. However, to solve quickly immediat questions or doubts wil use a Whatsapp group.
The main actors of this project are pupils from 13 to 17 years, because despite only few students travel, all students participate in one way or another, either interviewing a researcher or summarizing an spech or exchanging opinions online with peers.
The students who participate in international workshops or long-term activites are choosen following criteria of good marks and attitude. However the project benefiet more or less 600 students directly and indirectly all students of partners schools and more, because whoever can visit the website or the final exhibition “From the War to Peace” , showing students’ pictures, draws or writings about their experience. It is planned a continous dissemination during the two years.
The project will be based in a knowledge community, that collaborate in some open activities, where students, teachers and families can discuss and interacting. It appears as a non-formal interdisciplinary pedagogical tool wich offers an opportunity of recovering and reflection together on our common European historical and social heritage, building peace.
