Project Summary

Both schools, the Saulkrasti Secondary School of Latvia and the Greek School of Montessoriana / Paidagogiki Protoporia, as part of the “Generation Z at school” project, have successfully developed their collaboration in researching the TOP10 teaching methods of working with the Generation Z school.

The project focused on the Z generation (born after 2000), the most technologically skilled and socially empowered generation of children ever. They are very intuitive and confident users of digital technology, thus schools and classrooms must respond effectively to the changing learning styles of this generation.

During the project, two student groups were temporarily exchanged – one in Latvia and the other in Greece. A total of 19 students and 8 teachers participated in these exchanges to explore the concept of learning by doing for Generation Z at school, exchanging experiences and working together (students and teachers) on topics such as internet and social networking and security, Generation Z learning, perception, and literacy. In the final of the Greek delegation visit in Latvia together with the students all defined TOP10 methods that are useable in the learning process.

Also on closing visit, when the headmistress of Saulkrasti Secondary School Velta Kalnakārkle and teachers Marina Skļara and Līga Vilcāne went to Athens, Greece in order to try out the defined TOP 10 methods for working with generation Z, integrate the methods in teaching process and in future use the experience gained in ERASMUS+ KA229 “Generation Z at school” in Saulkrasti Secondary School. During the visit teachers got acquainted, tried out and planned the integration of the following in Saulkrastu Secondary School:
– Integration of game elements in physical education lessons and tests in overall physical readiness,
– Theory connection with real-life examples, tracing the process from the end product to primordial resources, for example, Kellogs, which is popular among children,
– When studying history, give the possibility for children to get into the characters of the particular time,
– Acquire knowledge in calculus and multiplying by using both interactive tools during lessons and practical exercises outside of classroom,
– Field trip organizing including interactive exercises using SEPPO application in areas such as art, cultural sciences, physical education, geography, and history,
– Application and use of foreign languages during field trips by translating the information gathered at the sightseeing objects and making presentations about the experience, in total developing foreign language application and abilities to reflect about the experience.

Given that the overall objective of the project is:
– strengthen the European dimension of the participating schools;
– developing the capacity of participating schools for cross-border cooperation;
– strengthen the capacity of schools to meet new challenges;
– promoting the values of inclusion and tolerance of pupils.

The project also helped to achieve these goals by directly strengthening cooperation between the participating schools. The staff had the opportunity to exchange teaching methodologies across subjects and generate common ideas for subject content, fostering a deeper engagement of students of Generation Z. Pupils had the opportunity to express their views on their wishes in the learning process, increase their cultural awareness and ability to learn and work in a multicultural team. Saulkrasti Secondary School has integrated the first step during the new school year with one of the methods – Seppo.io application, which facilitates the learning of the subject by means of flux and often outside the classroom.

This project is a small step for bigger changes in schools’ life, it is a step forward in creating modern and in competences established education in the future! And also the experience has fostered many ideas for future projects.
