Project Summary

Global Citizenship: the XXI century challenge!
The world is changing and nowadays the common situation is that different cultures live together in one country.
The borders of the countries are disappearing because of the distance that has disappeared: internet makes the world a small place.
People have to adjust to this situation. Look at the world and at themselves from a different perspective. They are not only inhabitants of their village/town, their region, province and country: they are inhabitants of the world: Global Citizens. Global Citizens can only live peacefully together if they have shared values. Global Values. If they look at what they have in common and not only at the differences. To develop Global Values, they will have to understand that although they have different identities in some aspects, part of their identities is the same: they are human, they live on the same planet, they can only survive with the care and respect of others, no matter what colour, race, gender or sexual preference they have. They have to beware of their Global Identity to be able to connect to other cultures. They have to be Global Citizens to make the world a better place for everybody.

In this project Martinuscollege from Grootebroek (Holland) and I.E.S. San Agustín del Guadalix from Spain (Madrid) want to become more international schools, with more tolerant students who believe in equality and respect for humanity and for the planet.
In the project we will focus on shared values and shared identity and make students think about what these are and what Global Citizenship means. What values concerning equal rights, women’s rights, gender, sexuality, immigrants, durability and environment does a global citizen have? We included two exchanges during which the students will design products in international couples, present products made before the exchange, visit institutions having to do with the theme. The exchanges are necessary because we want the students to work together internationally. It is important that the students meet each other. Experiencing what they have in common will help them to describe global citizenship. Looking from a different perspective to their own countries and lives.

Our aim is that the students that have participated in the project will have a clear idea about what Global Citizenship means and what the shared values of global citizens are or could be. We hope they will become ambassadors of Global Citizenship!
