Project Summary

This project, which deals with the environment at schools, has emerged after a lot of reflection from different members of our educational community.
After hearing the demands from teachers, students and parents, we have carried out a survey and the need of an environmental plan at school has emerged as a crucial aspect we need to work on. 89% of teachers answered they would like to have a School environmental plan at school, 86% of students said they would like to be involved in environmental activities and 100% of families agreed on changing some habits such as driving kids to school in order to care for the environment. Much has been done so far on this topic, but there is this commonly ackwoledged need for a careful, detailed plan which incorporate good practices from other schools which are currently working on similar topics. We would like to create and Environmental plan taking into account aspects such as: an energy audit, water use at school, zero waste: plastic, food (and realted to food a healthier diet at school). It goes without saying that this has turned to be (or we have finally realised) one of the key aspects for us as societies if we care for the sustainability of our project.en trying to work on these issues for the past years.
At the same time, we would like to link this topic with Cutural Heritage, to explore the ways the participant’s locations preserve their heritage.

The project is addressed mainly to students at our schools (13-17 years old). Teachers, parents and other staff will also take part. Our partnership consists of three schools: A Secondary school from Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Spain, a Vocational training school from Friburg and a Primary (formerly Middle school) from Mysiadlo, Poland.
The main objectives of this project are:
1 Create an environmental plan: For us it is essential to present in an organised way the different meassures a school deals with the environment from an educational and social point of view.
2 Make students aware of the need to care for the environment.
3 Identify the strengths and weaknesses of our schools in relation to the use of energy, water, food, plastic and other waste.
4 Create synergies among the participating schools through the different activities.
5 Improve the students’ knowledge on European Cultural Heritage and link in to the preservation of the environment.
6 Involve disadvantaged students in the activities proposed by the project as a means to motivate and engage them and improve their results, refraining them from leaving school without an accreditation.
7 Improve the internationalisation process of the schools.
8 Reflect and prepare ourselves for distante teaching and learning.
The results to be achieved are:
1 Creation of an Environmental plan at schools to be incorporated in the schools’ official documents.
2 Energy audit at school also takling the following topics: water, food, plastic and other waste. As a result of this we expect to get the following results.
3 Reduction of water used at schools by 15% at least.
4 Reduction of the power energy used at school and possible use of renewable energy, to be considered after audit.
5 Reduction of at least 30% the food wasted at school.
6 Reduction of food packaging at school by 35% .
7 Study about European Cultural Heritage + environment.
8 Increase in the participation of lower performers in activities and mobilities.
9 Inclusion of healthy, environmentally friendly food in the schools’ canteens.
10 Reduction of use of private transportation to come to school by 15%.
11 Analysis and study of distance learning.

We will carry this through four main short term mobilities for students: two in Spain, one in Poland and one in Germany, where students will take part in workshops related to: water, energy, plastic and food in relation to the environment. These will serve to create our environmental plan.

For us it is key to create a project that can be useful not only for our organisations, but for our communities and those around. THat is why we have designed a project with a clear transferability and scalabilty mark. This project, which has been created for schools, can be adapted to be transferred to any other type of institution, organisation, company. The documents we will create and our own experiences and implementation will serve them to start implementing a similar thing adapted to their characteristics.
