Project Summary
The Green.if.i. (green if I… / greenify) project is a call to raise awareness and to act against climate change and environment pollution in the participating schools and communities. It is a green journey through six countries from Northern, Western, Southern, Eastern and Central Europe – the schools are located in Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Slovakia, and Germany. Our geographical diversity will make us aware of the global impact climate change in different environments and the need to act together.
The main priorities of the project are the Environmental and Climate Goals, Social Inclusion and the Development of key competences.
Five of the schools have worked together in different projects and have learnt from each other to improve teaching and learning methods and health and well-being. After an analysis of our strengths and weaknesses and the impact of our present project, we identified the need to continue our collaboration focusing on climate change and environment. We agreed that we need to improve some of these aspects related to the daily routines in our schools, families and communities.
One of the motivations to choose this topic is the diversity of the five partners which allows us to share good practices using several key competences. One of the five partners is a special needs school from Greece, the partnership with this school has been important to adopt social inclusion as a key aspect of our projects. We aim at further develop this aspect in our future project.
To add a new dimension to the project we enriched our partnership with a school from Sweden. This school will enrich our partnership with its own field of expertise.
The project is addressed to secondary school students, aged 13-15. We aim to integrate the project in the school curriculum and ethos. The objective is to raise awareness and create and impact, first on the participating students and teachers, then on the school, the families and the local community.
In this project we will call to action setting objectives on climate change aspects during our six summits.
– First summit (Belgium): A call to action, introducing the five subtopics and fostering the creation of the active environmental groups.
– Second summit Germany): Stressing the relevance of forests as carbon storage, their current damage because of global warming, reforestation and ways of avoiding C02 emissions.
– Third summit (Sweden): Focusing on (food) waste, options of its avoidance and impact on the climate.
– Fourth summit (Greece): Dealing with biological agriculture as the only sustainable way of food production.
– Fifth summit (Spain): Working with the importance of water as an increasingly scarce source.
– Sixth summit (Slovakia): A reflection on the effects of industry and pollution, especially visible from the socialist era.
Before each summit we will do previous work about the specific topic in each country. These tasks will be shared at the summit where students and teachers will participate in workshops and activities about the subject. After each summit an action or a campaign related to the main topic will be created. We will share the actions and results in our project Twinspace – eTwinning will play an important role in the creation, development and sustainability of the project.
The objectives of the project are related to specific targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), whose aim is to preserve our planet for future generations. Our students and staff will become aware that even small actions can lead to big changes.
We also got inspired by the European Green Deal which is about improving the well-being of people. Making our planet climate-neutral and protecting our natural habitat should be a priority for every European citizen. In this regard social inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status plays a very important role in our project. Therefore integrating diversity students will be an essential aspect of the project. We will focus on social inclusion in each of the summits (integrating all students in the different activities).
The project is meant to have a lasting impact on each of the schools, through the actions of the different environmental groups created and through the awareness campaigns created after each summit. Besides we will create some “green.if.i.” days when campaigns / actions will be held after the project is finished.
