Project Summary

Limitless – digital learning in a Europe without borders

In both St. Josef Gymnasium (Germany) and the school of Liceul Teologic Romano – Catolic Gerhardium in Timisoara (Romania), a wish arose among students, teachers and parents to start a European school partnership.

Evaluations in both facilities showed that students are in possession of knowledge of the foreign language English but are lacking in practical application. As we view communication and mastery of the language as a key competence, English was declared “link language“.

Another motivation for our project was the perception of anti–European tendencies and nationalistic efforts which also occurred among students. That is why the partnership, by way of example, is ought to serve as a strengthening tool for the European community, for common values to be enforced, to be lived and passed down against the rise in nationalistic aspirations in some countries of the EU.

Talks in both school districts revealed that most people know a lot about their own culture and nation, but when it comes to other European countries they hardly know anything about culture and traditions. That is why students should learn about cultural values through interethical exchange, thus leading to cultural enrichment.

Both partner schools have started the process of digitalisation. But there are still lacks of how to use digital media in classrooms among both students and teachers. In this project learning and teaching processes are supposed to be improved with the help of various digital opportunities. Especially individualisation is supposed to be reinforced by a high amount of cooperative learning strategies in the lessons.
For both schools it became clear that students mainly use technical devices for communication in social media or for gaming and entertainment. That is why the project aims at an enhancement of digital opportunities: students are supposed to understand digital devices as tools for learning processes.

According to evaluations and the followings aim the target group of the project consists of about 30 students of Years 9-11 (age 14-18), their teachers, selected parents and host parents as well as local players.

The school partnership is supposed to arouse a high openness for Europe’s diversity in language, society, ethnicity and culture among students, teachers and parents. By developing interdisciplinary projects with the help of digital media especially language skills are supposed to be improved, creativity broadened and critical thinking fostered.
Another main goal of the project is digital well-being throughout school routine without discrimination, violence, racism and cyberbullying. A critical usage of digital devices is expected to contribute to this goal.
By developing open learning materials and efficient, creative and cooperative usage of digital technologies the digital competence of students, teachers and parents is supposed to be strengthened.

By realizing these goals the actual exchange during the annual meetings is supposed to serve the getting to know of the participants of the project and their respective culture. In this time the participants of the project are supposed to develop topics from the fields “science, social sciences or arts” together to initiate a performance of the choir or a mutual experimental lecture. During the whole period of time interdisciplinary topics are supposed to be dealt with to create digital contributions. Moreover we aim at a linkage of teaching materials by sharing them in a digital way. By doing so, the project groups will deepen their knowledge digitally. They will communicate with the help of eTwinning and present their results in a public blog. With the help of this blog, our results can be used not only by our two schools, but also by all people who are interested.

In our project “Limitless – digital learning in a Europe without borders” the focus is on mutual digital learning. We hope for the digital progress to offer us the chance to overcome physical and mental limits in the long run.
