Project Summary
According to the report named “A Living Language” issued by Cervantes Institute in 2018 (https://www.thisistherealspain.com/en/citizenship/spanish-a-community-with-577-million-speakers/) Spanish is the language that is growing the most in the world is currently spoken by almost 560 million people as their first or second language. It is one of the top five second languages taught in the European Union. As these statistics and reports show, teaching the Spanish language in schools is almost a priority nowadays.
We aimed to write this project in order to enhance the students’ language learning through the prism of Hispanic culture. We believe that the impact of learning Spanish as a foreign language will be much higher if we rely on genuine cultural aspects of the Spanish and Hispanic world, and if we interact with native speakers, as it is the case of the Spanish partner. As a foreign language project, we also aim to develop the communicative competence of the student and the intra/interpersonal and intercultural competencies and to promote innovation in learning foreign languages through the use of new methodologies and teaching resources.
The project is carried on by four partner schools from Spain, Italy, Portugal and Turkey and involves a number of almost 1000 students aged between 11 and 15. And a total number of 15/20 teachers of Spanish language and other disciplines as the methodological approach to teaching is an interdisciplinary one. The partner schools are both from urban areas (Italy, Turkey, Portugal) but also rural areas (Spain) where students with different ethnic, social, religious and economical backgrounds are educated. The students from the Italian, Portuguese and Turkish schools learn Spanish as a second foreign language and have almost the same level.
The project was designed to incorporate the most important cultural aspects of the Hispanic world, such as literature, arts, music, cuisine, history, and traditions. Each partner is responsible for one of these topics which makes the core of their mobilities. During our project the acknowledge of the students about Spanish and Hispanic world will be widened but also their communication skills will be improved through video calls, face to face activities during the mobilities, drama activities, collaborative virtual exchanges among students, and written communicative activities and also they will have an opportunity to discuss the topics we worked on, such as forums, blogs, etc in etwinning. We have already started our Etwinning project https://twinspace.etwinning.net/110523/home to realize our planned activities at the very beginning of our project. At first, the students of partner schools will organize some events to present themselves. All activities of our Twinspace will be done before, during or after mobilities. so many other students,, from other schools, but also from other ones who are interested in the H.O.L.A. method and topic can learn about it throughout the H.O.L.A. Etwinning version. We planned four short-term exchanges of groups of pupils in each of the partner countries and a joint staff training event named “Increasing our learning to improve our teaching” which will be held in Italy. The projects’ activities will be also supported with internal and external dissemination activities during and after the project by many other institutions, teachers and parents organizing presentations, exhibitions, contests, visitings, workshops, local radio broadcasts. All partners will share all the learning material, guides and results obtained during the activities into their own schools and publish it on their own online platforms/ websites to reach a larger number of beneficiaries. In the long term, teachers will work to integrate these teaching guide instructions into their strategic teaching-learning and to provide the sustainability of the project. General evaluation of the project will be made both locally and at the international level with the surveys that will be implemented by both the students and relevant teachers. And these results will be shared with the school administrations too. Questionnaire, interviews, satisfaction questionnaires will be carried out for students, teachers, and parents.
As a result of the project, we expect the students to become more skilled in the Spanish language but also about its rich culture by interacting with their peers coming from different countries and developing the consciousness of being EU citizens. Their participation in society will improve on the international dimension as well, they will have a more positive attitude towards EU projects and values. While working on the project they will improve their skills like critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, analyzing, assessment, unifying ideas, collaboration as well, which are the expected 21st-century skills for students.
