Project Summary
This project aims to develop high school students’ understanding, competences and attraction on a global and changeable labour market. The students at Klara Teoretiska Gymnasium in Sundsvall and Björneborgs Svenska Samskola have that in common, that they live in towns that has historically been strong and important industrial districts in their countries, but where large sectors of the industries have been shut down or moved abroad. Where older generations often saw working in the local industries as a natural choice, this is far from the first choice for today’s youth. The modern labour market requires a lot from the young people who will be a part of it in a few years.
By learning from the history of both our communities, high school students will acquire the tools needed to reflect over both their own and their home towns’ development in history, today and in the future. This is made in several steps, where the main goal is a journey in time in Björnborg and Sundsvall, and a seminar together with local politicians, where students share their thoughts around how the communities can become more attractive for companies and employees, through the competences that they have identified during their work, and that the municipalities can make use of and develop. The conclusions and knowledges will also be presented for everyone who are interested, through movies and brochures published online.
Ten students from each school will participate in the physical exchange, where we visit Björneborg and Sundsvall to make the journeys in time and meet politicians. But in total, 32 students from Sundsvall and 25 students from Björneborg will be an active part of the project. The project starts in September 2020, when the semester starts, and goes on until December 2021, when the participating schools make a final evaluation. During the fall the project will carry on in our respective schools, where the students will prepare their journeys by learning more about the history of the towns. This is made through interviews, field trips and collecting information in different ways. The schools keep in touch mainly through Google Classroom and Google Meet, where we share information and have reflecting seminars and planning, until we visit each other in the spring of 2021 and that the document Vision 2030 is produced and published during the end of the final semester 2021 and the first semester of 2022.
In a long term this project can help our schools to adapt the education more to teach and train the students form the knowledges and competences that make them more attractive on a global and globalized labour market. This could also help the municipalities of Sundsvall and Björneborg to attract local young adults to stay and work in their home town, and to become more natural choices for people who are looking for a place to live and work in the future.
