Project Summary
The world, as we know it, has been enduring a very striking health crisis due to the coronavirus outbreak. Unfortunately, a possible economic depression is likely to arise and whenever such a situation happens, many times people are deprived from their basic human rights such as the right to proper health care, education and work. This problem is going to be global. However, migrants who are fleeing from places in which their lives would be in peril might have hard times finding organisations and communities who are willing to give them the right as human beings.
Bearing in mind this international context, this project aims to build a platform for youths to work on topics related to human rights, to spread their knowledge and to take part in a societal discussion.
Rudbecksgymnasiet in Örebro, Sweden, came in contact, through a common mutual colleague, with Colégio Júlio Dinis in Porto, Portugal, an institution that was looking for an exchange partner. In September 2019 the schools had a preparatory visit in Porto to plan an upcoming human rights project. The objective of this project is to examine the human rights issues/situation in Portugal, in Sweden and in the EU. Furthermore, the insights will be spread through discussions with politicians, campaigns via movies, podcasts and powtoon on social media. The main focus at the Swedish meetings will be on the current migrant situation. This includes topics dealing with racism, xenophobia, discrimination, human rights, social inclusion and the panhandle situation with EU-migrants. Amnesty International will take active part in this meeting because Rudbecksgymnasiet is labelled as a certified Amnesty school with an active Amnesty student group.
In Portugal the main focus will be on gender equality, women’s rights, consent, cultural differences, domestic violence, paternal/maternal leave, parentship, #metoo, unpaid work, sports and locker room talk will be examined and the situation will be spread through the same type of campaigns as in Sweden. The organizations APAV (Portuguese Association for Victim Support) as well as CIG (Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality) will also be involved with lectures and discussions with students.
The plan is to have a two-year project and in every year we intend to increase the level of knowledge in the student groups and also continue to spread the knowledge and insights both within schools and to our communities. In every year, 14 new students from the Social Science programme at Rudbecksgymnasiet and Colégio Júlio Dinis will take part in one meeting in Örebro, Sweden, in autumn and one meeting in spring in Porto, Portugal.
The expected results are to raise awareness within the targeted audience, our pupils, partner schools but also within our communities of the human rights issues in specific countries but also in the EU as a whole. Another expected result will also be having youth taking that it lets youths take part in societal debate around these important current issues.
The methodology the partnership intends to use is the following: activities will start up with icebreakers so that the students get to know each other and exchange experiences that highlight likenesses and differences between their life situations culturally. Then we will divide the student group into smaller work groups that specialize in different subtopics on immigration and gender equality. We will have lectures with meetings and discussions with Amnesty in Sweden where the students get to deepen their understanding of immigration issues. Then there will be preparations for the campaigns and at last a conference with local politicians where the students also will have an active part.
The same goes for the meeting in Porto but the topic is around gender equality and the students will get divided in smaller focus groups with each working on a subtopic of gender equality.
The results will be the campaigns on the topics with movies and podcasts made by the students. The conference will also be a part of the result. It will generate that the knowledge and interest for these questions increase both within the student group but also with all the people that will be reached by the campaign. With the conference the project develops and strengthens the bond to the local community and creates active citizenship. To get a deeper understanding between the two countries and the whole EU around human rights is central in evaluating this project which is a longer-term benefit of this project.
Other tangible results such as the Handbook, the Teaching Units, the project’s website and Twinspace will allow the dissemination at a global scale, thus allowing any European school to profit from the HRE project products, producing a greater impact at a long-run on its direct and indirect participants but also on the project’s stakeholders and all those who will have access to our project platforms and products.
This is our work plan and we will succeed.
