Project Summary
The theme for the project was “natural science, math and technology in preschool activities”. The knowledge of natural science is becoming more and more important and yet the interest for studying the subjects is low when students come up in the education system.
A change is important, and we are sure that activities in preschools can create both curiosity and interest for natural science, math, and technology.
At the same time, the preschool teacher’s knowledge in the subjects are generally low and the need for educating this key group is so important.
“Hypatia in Preschool, natural science, math and technology in preschool activities” was a project with preschools from Greece, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey.
All participating preschools were aware of the general situation and all were also especially interested in working with natural science, math, and technology in different ways. Out-door pedagogy, mathematics for preschools, earth and space, coding, Light and shadows, “hands on” science, entrepreneurship and working with natural material was themes that the involved preschools contributed with. With a knowledge of the situation and also experienced in some parts of the subjects the project group had a good opportunity to create Learning, Teaching and Training Activity that could affect very much on the group of its whole.
The project wanted to gather preschool teachers and gave them an opportunity to participate in Learning, Teaching and Training Activities about natural science, mathematics and technology, to learn about the subjects, to hear about the scientistic frontlines by university researchers, to participate in workshops, to visit preschools where teachers and children showed new and exciting methods and discussed the subjects with their international colleagues. In the project we also wanted to investigate the possibilities for preschools to cooperation with resource centres like museums and Science Centres. Each Learning, Teaching and Training Activity gathered about 20 preschool workers from the project countries and also a group of local preschool teachers who listened to the lectures from their local universities.
The project collected best practice about working with natural science, math and technology and the scientific front line in early childhood education and published it in public sources, like Twinspace at eTwinning.net, that other preschool teachers got access to.
As a long-term benefit all preschools have also included the new methodologies learned during the Learning, Teaching and Training Activities. Another benefit of the project has been the cultural enrichment in accordance with the spirit of the Erasmus+ programme.
Knowledge in science, mathematics and technology is essential for the development of society. To start this education in preschool is important and this project showed a way to do it and to continue this important Early Childhood Education and Care work.
Because of the corona pandemic the cordination group had to change the planning of the final Learning Teaching and Training Activity. The project group was not allowed to visit Romania in May 2020 as planned because of the Covid-19 virus. Then the group decided to extend the time for the project with six months, but the time was still too short for arranging a physical Learning, Teaching and Training activity in Botosani. The project group decided finally that Gradinita P.P. ,,Sotron” could arrange a two days virtual Learning, Teaching and Training Activity.
With this change it was possible for the preschool in Botosani to plan for the virtual LTT meeting in analogy with the other LTT events and show their part of the project.
The Activity C.6 – Learning, Teaching and Training in Botosani, Romania took place as an event LTT in virtual format with a duration of two days, on February 4-5, 2021.
