Project Summary

It is the main objective of the participating schools in the partnership to strengthen the European dimension in the participating schools and to prepare their students for life in Europe. The main objective of the schools cooperating in the framework of this project is to create a concept for the sustainable implementation of the topic “Becoming a Citizen of Europe” in classes and activities. The innovative idea is to develop teaching modules for the primary, SI and SII levels, which build on one another in terms of content. This objective is also in line with the idea of European citizenship introduced by the Lisbon Treaty (Article 19).
As fascinating as this European idea still is, many Europeans feel alienated from the European institutions and, in the face of ongoing crises and increasing right-wing populist forces, have doubts as to whether Europe can successfully master the great challenges of the future. Citizens’ identification with the European community has not grown to the same extent as the competences of the EU and the self-understanding formulated as a community of values at the political level. Many citizens have reservations against the EU, as evidenced, for example, by the low turnout in the European elections. The EU’s political system is complicated and difficult to comprehend, and such information and explanation deficits certainly make it hard to identify with the EU.
For the participating schools, this sets the focus on fascinating students early on; we want them to be enthusiastic about being a citizen of Europe and about seeing the diversity of a united Europe as enriching their lives. Students should understand early on that Europe is united, above all, for the benefit and the advantage of its citizens.
The target group of the project are teachers who, as multipliers of educational work, are prepared to develop teaching modules that enable their pupils to gain a European civic awareness.
In the long run, this will strengthen democratic civil society in Europe.
