Project Summary

Our group decided to build a project based around the theme of “Immigration” with the aim of increasing awareness of the cause and effect of immigration across the whole of Europe. We wanted to compare how immigration effected students in different locations in Europe and how our students could help the integration of immigrants into our cities; minimising discrimination, segregation and racism. Our aim was to to develop resources in a range of different media in 5 different European languages and involve the experiences of external agencies.

It has been a great experience for both students and teachers to take part in this project. When we started I think we all had a pretty good idea of what it would mean to be a refugee, however that idea has been challenged during our visits to the different countries. Of course the current refugee crisis with people crossing the Mediterranean Sea is very much in focus but we also worked with refugees within different countries and different historical periods like the Spanish civil war and World War 2.

Not only the students in the project but also colleagues, parents and peer-students have had the chance to get involved through evening lectures with people talking about the work of Sea-Watch or Venligboerne and also meeting actual refugees, who told their stories.

The meetings in Germany, Denmark, Spain and Iceland with students all had different themes and involved a wide range of activities such as acting, music, arts, reading, lectures, discussion, web-programmes, video making and editing, dancing, sports and socializing.
At the meetings we brought between 4 and 8 students from each country who worked with the activities in transnational groups. At every meeting we started with small presentations of the different schools, towns and countries.

All though the students worked with the videos and had great ideas on how to make these, the lack of professional equipment made it difficult to make videos with sufficient picture and sound quality.

Looking back at the last two years working with this project, we think that we have risen the awareness of immigration and immigration related problems in our local communities. We have developed resources available on our website http://necstudies.eu in different languages.
