Project Summary
Improving Standards in Teaching School Sport to foster Physical, Cognitive and Social Development in PupilsThe project partners from A,FI, the CZ, LV and PL improved the way how sports lessons are taught at their schools and by doing so they support the development of health and fitness in the area, to combine school sports with the expertise of sports clubs and professionals and support language skills both in teachers and pupils. The partners organised 3 short term teacher training events, in which teachers got information provided by experts and professional coaches on ball sports (football, basketball and innovative ball games -tschouk ball), on the wintersports – ice hockey, cross country skiing and running and on watersports. Teachers learned methods like video analyses and the usage of English in their lessons. They also improved their ICT knowledge by being trained in etwinning to use the TwinSpace and how they can edit video material. Most of all, they learned from best practise examples and from the various experiences the partners provided, Especially the associated partners from the sport clubs in the regions Furthermore, 5 short term pupil exchange events were organised by the participating schools to accomplish the following tasks: to evaluate the impact of the new training methods, to foster the motivation of pupils by organising meetings with professional athletes, to increase their knowledge of English and training methods by letting them discuss various topics like sport and advertisement, sport and performance enhancing drugs, grassroots versus competitive sport, sport and a healthy lifestyle concerning team or individual sport and by exercising interviews with top athletes, coaches or experts and last but not least doing the sports actively in lessons. They trained their English orally but also their writing competences as they wrote project posters. Both teachers and pupils got to know Europass CV and had training in using Twin Space. On a local level we provided the chance for unaccompanied refugees and migrant children to take part in the activities, so that they cann establish contact to the local sports clubs and so more easily can integrate. To open up schools for these children also helps all the schools pupils to develop understaning for these children´s situation.Three transnational meetings of teachers and coordinators were organised to guarantee smooth preparation, evaluation of ongoing work, implementation and dissemination of project activities and results. Our results are video clips about training methods , lesson plans for the involved sports and newspaper articles, We published videos on YouTube and on our school websites as well as on our TwinSpace. The new data security made the publication very difficult. Before each international meeting teachers prepared the topic beforehand, at the meeting they documented results, After the meeting they implemented experiences, methods learned in teacher trainings or pupil exhanges into the regular lessons of the classes they had chosen at their schools. The results video clips of training sessions, photo evaluations, project newspapers were published on the school websites . The evaluation of the soft aims – increase of cooperation with sports clubs, behavioural change in pupils, dissemination of results in the regions were accomplished with the help of specialists of the pedagogical university in Upper Austria, the representatives of the sports clubs and the school teams For this, surveys, feedback interviews and traffic light feedback in teacher conferences were used. Dissemination activities were parents nights, sport days at each school, press conferences, publication on websites and presentation at local teacher training Events and regional or nationonal (Latvia) TV stations reported about the Project. Sustainabiltiy of the project was reached by implementing the new methods into the school curricula, providing material on websites and sharing the experiences and newly gained knowledge in local teacher training events. The European dimension was reached as we address important European topics as keeping the population healthy and fit, to provide motivating and successful learning environments, to increase cooperation between schools, teachers, pupils and a wider community represented by parents and sports clubs from different European countries. The overall aim was to foster sportsmanship, tolerance and fair play in sports and in society. In the project evaluation teachers said that they profited a lot from the cooperation with other European teachers and even more important were the meetings with the professional coaches. Pupils said that to participate in international sports meetings raised their motivation and their English language skills. Headmasters reported that the project was recognized by the public. It raised the schools´ recognition in the area. The project had a positive influence on sports education
