Project Summary

The project “A ‘la recherche du‘ pain quotidien ’à travers la Méditerranée”, after the withdrawal of the Cypriot school, saw the participation of Italy, France and Romania. The team of teachers from these different countries have shared the desire to make sense of their teaching to better motivate students who are looking for values and identities in a constantly evolving world. The themes around which we worked were:
1. bread: the staple food of our Mediterranean diet but also a metaphor for life, a sacred element of our civilization, we found it in art, literature and cinema.
2. immigration: the three countries worked on their history of immigration and emigration.
3. prejudices: how they are born and how to defeat them, what it means to be a victim of prejudice, role play have been proposed
4. empathy: students were given tips to think about the concept of empathy, so role play have been proposed.
The objectives have been fully achieved: the students have discovered the traditional national culture of the partner countries, shared their knowledge with other foreign students, reflected on the quality of food, increased self-confidence thanks to teamwork, they carried out tasks together with their foreign comrades, communicated in a foreign language (French, English, Italian) and improved their language skills, made use of new technological tools, had the opportunity to develop greater national and European awareness thanks to research work on the proposed themes, they have developed artistic skills, such as: traditional folk dance and music from each partner country, they have succeeded in overcoming prejudices towards others, they have understood and reflected on empathy, becoming united towards who must leave their own country and face many difficulties in the new one.
The proposed activities were many: seminars, educational outings, group work, research, use of new technologies for the presentation of the tasks, laboratories, role play.
The results obtained had repercussions: at the local level, the coordinator and the person in charge of the diffusion of our school have organized some visibility activities of the project involving the population of the territory and emphasizing it through the involvement of the local media, the number of students enrolled in our school has increased considerably, positive data are recorded relating to better academic performance and greater integration by the most disadvantaged pupils.
At an international level, this project offered pupils some important insights, working on the “bread” product, understanding migratory processes, the nature of prejudices, empathy, our future European citizens have gone beyond cultural and psychological barriers in order to accept Diversity.
