Project Summary
Patient non-adherence is a patient deviation from recommendations provided by medical professionals as to the drug taking. According to WHO, it happens to 50% of patients suffering from chronic diseases, and first of all, among the elderly. It has very serious health and financial consequences. However, as research has shown, health workers are not fully aware of its prevalence or seriousness. Therefore, they do not take preventive or corrective action.
The purpose of this project is to improve the ability of medical staff to manage the non-adherence and polytherapy in older people, due to developing and disseminating the training curriculum “European training program for medical workers in the field of competence to improve compliance with therapeutic recommendations and to prevent polytherapy in elderly people”. This program will address two main target groups: medical students and medical professionals.
Thanks to the cooperation of European experts in research on non-adherence, and the of interventions that may have a positive impact on this phenomenon (Medical University of Lodz, University of Porto, ICS Maugeri), an innovative educational program will be developed in response to the target groups’ needs. The on-line training methods and tools used will be unique: so far, the issue of providing the vocational training for the medical workers in the areas of competence needed to improve the management of compliance with treatment recommendations and polytherapy among older people as never been solved. The professionals trained in this program will receive formal certifications that will confirm their acquisition of competence and open an avenue for a further career. The effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of their work will be improved and their chances of employment and / or self-employment will also increase. The measure of the success of this project will be the number of trained professionals.
Incorporation of the European Society for Patient Adherence, Compliance and Persiscetnce (ESPACOMP) as an associate partner, as well as using the potential of the European Innovation Partnership for Active and Healthy Aging (EIP on AHA) will allow effective dissemination of the results of this project. Ensuring the longevity of the results of this project will increase the number of target group representatives who will benefit from this project results. The dissemination activities carried out by the consortium will further enhance the impact of the project.
