Project Summary

The economic strategy for the Europe calls for world class business skills in engineering, life sciences, digital technology, green technology, as well as language skills to drive exports, logistics skills to create more effective working and innovators to develop new products. Europe also needs more people in care roles as well as entrepreneurs who build their own business. At present many of our adults – especially in deprived areas aspire to local, low paid jobs – and have not been encouraged to think more broadly, nationally, internationally or interculturally. The European Commission has adopted the proposal for a new Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong learning in 2018. According to the report, competence requirements have changed with more businesses being subject to automation, technologies playing a bigger role in all areas of work and life, and entrepreneurial activities. Personal, social and civic competences becoming more relevant in order to ensure resilience and ability to adapt to change.

Europe needs to develop adults’ individual ‘soft skills’ and collective intercultural competences. Recognising that each individual is unique – with strengths and abilities that should shape their aspirations and build their confidence. Good self-awareness is the beginning of emotional intelligence – the ability to understand what drives (and frustrates) us and how we differ from others. The Interculturality – Intercultural competence for international business development project will therefore focus on the Key competences of:
• Entrepreneurship
• Civic skills
• Personal, Social and Learning
• Cultural awareness and expression

The “Interculturality” project builds upon the experience of partners from Spain,Italy, Turkey, Sweden, Poland and the UK and aims at enabling adult educators to develop intercultural competences in adult learners to develop personal skills and improve chances of securing employment, starting own businesses or updating own competences.

The “Interculturality” projects’ target group is represented by adult educators who are the key to improve and transfer competences and impact directly on the end users (adult learners, managers, team leaders, company owners). The project is innovative since it focuses on building the capacity of adult educators in their specific occupational context. It is focused on training and workplace practices that is reflected in the design and proposed outcomes of the project.

Outcomes include:

1. A methodological framework to boost the key competences and intercultural skills of adult, including analysis of good practices and return on investment for enterprises

2. A self-assessment App focusing on assessing personal intercultural competences of adult learners, built upon ‘coaching principles’ and a set of practical scenarios and gameful challenges related to intercultural competences and life skills.

3. An OER eLearning platform for adult educators and learners based upon a scenario based method. Focus will be on cultural drivers, perceptions, stereotypes and expectations across cultures, intercultural management, global leadership.

4. A continuous professional development (CPD) course for adult educators, including a Learning Outcome Matrix according to the European Qualification Framework (EQF) as a set of learning outcomes (LO) – in terms of knowledge, skills and competences.

The activities foreseen in the Interculturality project will provide opportunities for adults throughout Europe to develop their personal and leadership skills, their enterprise abilities and their understanding of different cultures. On the long term this will help to reduce the level of interpersonal conflicts in international relations and therefore improve the yielding of enterprises and institutions thus increasing the number of business transactions, improving the welfare of populations as a result of successful business increase at national and international level.
