Project Summary
This project was created from the necessity to create collaboration to achieve a common purpose: finding solutions to counteract social exclusion. In the light of the social crisis which has impacted greatly on Europe, this project has aimed at educating young people and giving them a deeper understanding of the need to face current social problems and to get involved, propose and carry out initiatives that can have an impact on their social environment. By means of this project we have achieved the following objectives: to educate the school community and help them to understand the need to face current problems related to refugees, migration and other social situations by attending lectures, carrying out interviews, creating an inclusion plan at school, among others; to encourage young people to become responsible EU citizens, aware of and respecting the different cultures; to raise public awareness of the need to work together to ensure the future of our communities and the entire world by means of intercultural projects, both in the face-to-face and online modalities due to Covid-19 restrictions; to motivate young people to create a better and safer world as well as experience first-hand important aspects of cooperation in the EU; to motivate students and teachers in language education and its importance to communicate with European partners, improving their speaking and writing skills in a foreign language; to design and implement motivational and meaningful activities which help to achieve all other objectives, develop competences and act from an entrepreneurial perspective; and finally, to obtain relevant outputs and outcomes and diffuse them through various ways in order to cause a significant impact on participants and communities, such as on the project’s blog and website.
Moreover, this project has been carried out transnationally by sharing knowledge and experiences, encouraging participants to enhance their social responsibility and enriching their knowledge about other countries, thus increasing respect for each other and our differences. Participants´ language skills have been promoted and the experiences linked to this project have helped to improve self-confidence and possibly enhance further European cooperation. A minimum of 250 students, coming from different social, cultural and educational backgrounds, have been involved in the learning, teaching and training activities. Additionally, participating teachers have had a dynamic, collaborative, responsible and decisive profile and they have also contributed their expertise in taking leadership roles, coordinating and participating in other projects.
With respect to methodology, it has been active, participatory and collaborative. Therefore, all activities have been based on cooperative work and have required the collective effort of all participants. Learning by doing has been predominant as interaction and communication has played an essential role. Students’ involvement has been enhanced by encouraging them to explore new ideas and be creative as well as by making them feel part of a network of people who share common goals.
Regarding the follow-up, evaluations have been made by all participants in different stages through questionnaires, rubrics, interviews… Direct and online meetings have been held regularly to assess the run of the project and make the necessary readjustments Furthermore, dissemination of outputs and outcomes has been a key factor for the success of the project.
Finally, it is expected that this project will have a considerable impact and long-term benefits for participants, as they have increased their knowledge about refugees and immigrants through direct contact, and therefore, have learned to look immigration from different perspectives and have a better understanding of refugees’ situation. Besides, they have enhanced their language, digital, social, professional and cooperative skills. Lastly, participants have developed European partnerships which benefit schools and organizations and give them a European dimension.
