Project Summary
The growth of the TV series sector worldwide – both in terms of audience and of investments by the televisions, the producers and the digital distribution platforms – represents a strategic opportunity for the European and the Southern-Neighbourhood countries. To contribute to the development of this creative and cultural industry in the region, a strategic transnational and inter-sector partnership has been set up by 5 European and Southern-Mediterranean higher education organisations working in the cinema and TV domain, an international distance university and a national television, under the coordination of COPEAM, a Euro-Mediterranean audiovisual network, with the aim to conceive and implement a transnational innovative training in the field of TV series writing. Thanks to a deep preliminary analysis of the specific skills needed by the target market, to the experimentation of some innovative pedagogic methods and tools, to the integration of an international perspective and to an effective collaboration between the educational and the professional sectors, a curriculum has been designed and tested to reinforce the students and young professionals’ expertise and know-how and their employability within the job market at the international level.
In order to reach these goals, the partners has jointly developed the following 5 intellectual outputs:
– Analysis of the TV series market in Europe and in the Euro-Mediterranean region, in terms of production trends and investments, of working methods applied, of needed skills, and of specific training offer
– Innovative and transnational curriculum in the field of TV series writing
– E-learning tools: training modules and MOOC
– Criteria, methods and tools to evaluate the skills and the training’s results
– Evaluation report about the pilot training in TV series writing
Results:
– The needs in terms of training and skills development in the field of TV series writing are assessed at Euro-Mediterranean level;
– An innovative, transnational and intercultural training (6 countries concerned, 3 European and 3 of the Southern Neighbourhood) in the field of TV series writing, able to answer to the real needs of the concerned job market in the Euro-Mediterranean region, is jointly conceived and developed by the partner organisations, by building on their different expertises and approaches;
– A pilot edition of the 1-year blended training (workshops, interactive activities, e-learning tools, teamwriting practical exercise) is implemented in the 5 partner schools and 29 selected students and/or young professionals already active in the sector and willing a specialisation improved their skills and know-how, reinforced their employability and obtained ECTS credits;
– An evaluation system is defined and tested on the pilot training and on its results, to improve the training offer and its pertinence in respect to the needs of the job market. The evaluation of the skills acquired by the students based on common criteria represents an important contribution in the domain of competences recognition in a sector under evolution like the one of the TV series;
– A network of young TV scriptwriters and of trainers is developed, thus allowing the setting up of future initiatives and synergies at the international level.
COPEAM was in charge of the general management of the project and of the dissemination activity. The partners set up a Pedagogic Committee and a Coordination Committee to jointly implement the planned activities and steps and to reach the project’s goals.
This strategic action has enriched the training offer of the cinema schools in a context of pedagogic innovation and of international and inter-sector cooperation. The trained pool of young talents has improved its employability and its skills and has conceived some original TV series projects to the proposed to the production market. In the long term, this means training the future generation of professionals in the field of TV series, by fostering its creativity and expertise.
