Project Summary

With this project we made pupils aware that it is better for the environment to use products from their “regional backyard” instead of using products with a long transport history.
This project put the student`s eye on the products that grow in their “regional backyard” and showed them ways how they can shrink their carbon footprint.
All schools put their focus on how CO2 is produced, how the CO2 cycle runs, what impact is has on the climate, what climate change means and on explaining technical terms.
We searched for ways of reducing our Carbon Footprint, looked at the need for sustainability and learned about renewable and non-renewable energy sources.
Students now have an increased knowledge about seasonal products available in their “regional backyard”. They are now able to use the products sparingly and by this reduce their carbon footprint and waste production.
The project was divided into four sections, related to the seasons, SPRING and SUMMER in the first year, FALL and WINTER in the second year. In each season the focus was laid on typical products that grew in each country´s „regional backyard”.

LONG TERM BENEFITS
During the project work it showed that the parents accepted the inputs, coming from their children. Some started to change their lifestyle accordingly. Students came more often to school on foot, the use of “Mum is a Taxi driver” was shortened, snacks became more eco-friendly, the production of waste in school was reduced, while shopping, more and more parents checked the country of origin. Parents and students try to avoid unessential food packaging. The use of plastic in class was reduced. Drinking cups and drinking bottles made out of glass, book covers made out of paper are used now. In classes the focus is put on eco-friendly note books from recycled paper.
