Project Summary

Project ´´Library for Education 50 plus“.
In the last decades libraries have undergone radical transformations. While libraries still offer basic library services, the way libraries operate was largely influenced by the digitalization and automatization of working procedures as well as by the way people communicate information. An indispensable part of the library mission is the popularization of literature and authors, but now also the non-formal learning activities for general public as well. Libraries have always accepted societal demands and, accordingly, have adopted the thematic focus of educational and free time activities. One of those societal topics is the aging of European society, which is the reason of elaboration of strategic papers on an international, national and regional level. These papers often use the term ´´active aging´´, which has become the main topic of our project: Libraries for Education 50 plus“.
Goals of the project:
1. Analysis and mutual inspiration of partner libraries in the domain of educational activities for the general public through the exchange of experiences. (mobilities)
2. Based on technical, personal and spatial possibilities and based on analysis of public interest and experiences, the educational activities models should be elaborated by every partner.
3. Implementation of pilot educational activities and the broadening offers of educational activities with the emphasis on target group 50 plus.
Partner organizations:
3 partner organizations participated in the project.
The initiator of the idea, the Public Library of Jan Bocatius in Košice, has contacted foreign partners in Czech Republic and Hungary. Invitation for partnership was accepted by the Moravian Scientific Library in Ostrava and the Regional and Municipal Library of Ferencz Rákoczi II in Miskolc (II.Rákóczi Ferenc Megyei és Városi Könyvtár Miskolc). The common feature of the partner libraries are their regional competencies including the care of regional documents, methodical competencies on the regional level in relation to public libraries (regional, city and village libraries) and their participation in the process of non-formal life-long learning through their information and library activities and through organizing educational activities for the general public.
Duration of the project was set from 1.11.2016 till 31.10.2018.
Description of main activities:
During the project implementation, the exchange of experiences took place in 2 series of librarian mobilities with the aim (1. part of project) of analyzing the libraries and the use of their potential during the preparation of systematic non-formal education for the selected age category. Four librarians from every library participated in these mobilities and visited every library for 5 working days.
The output of the project was the preparation of the drafts of thematic educational cycles, whose pilot activities of non-formal education for 50 plus were implemented by all the partners from 1.9.2017 till 30.6.2018. In this time frame, a second series of mobilities took place, again for 5 days and in every partner library, 2-3 colleagues from every library participated in this mobilities. The project has been overseen by project management consisting of 2 representatives per partner organization. They met 5 times during the project implementation at international meetings.
Achieved results and impact:
a) During the project, 6 mobilities including 30 librarians lasting 30 days took place
b) Partners implemented pilot educational activities as mobilities outputs e.g.:
– 3 intensive educational cycles, series of thematic artistic workshops, 2 short-term educational cycles,
– 20 clubs were established with a monthly frequency of meetings,
– A total of 238 lectures and meetings with 2289 registered participants took place,
– Thematic background materials for 3 educational cycles and 1 cycle of artistic workshops were created,
– A marketing brochure about the clubs´ activities, as well as, one publication as a supporting document for the club activity were published,
Long-term contributions, sustainability of the realized activities:
Pilot non-formal educational activities and experiences gained in their organizing, as well as, the communication of partners, have enlarged the offer of activities targeting the general public. Most of the educational activities will continued to be offered by the partners on an on-going basis with the most successful clubs´ activities even after the project ends. In 2019, 18 thematic clubs, created during the implementation of the project, will continue their activities and they will be financed from the library budgets or grants, from which, partners plan to apply from different complementary sources.
