Project Summary
We are a group of young people from the village of Bioul (Anhée/ Namur- Belgium). We are all descendants of italian young workers, our grand-parents who have come to work in a stone quarry near the village because of the coal treaty in 1946 between Italy and Belgium. This migration has been very hard for them and the integration in the belgian community often difficult! We, their descendants, would like to find back our roots and trace the (hi)story of our grand-parents by paying a tribute to them through a documentary. This film will consist of real testimonies of the remaining migrants alive as well as pictures of the native region in Italy (Caneva-Frioûl) that will be presented to us by young people from the area with whom we would have had many contacts before. The main objective is cultural: we will go in search of our history, our origins, our european identity…we will pay a tribute to the choice of our grand-parents and understand the complexity of the migration problem. We will meet young italians in order to construct back a link that has become so thin through the generations.
Other objectives will be the learning of audiovisual techniques as well as organization, cooperation, solidarity and communication skills (through young people and between different generations)
The project will involve 10 young belgians and 8 young italians from the regions dealt with through the project. We are between 13 and 30 years old.
The project will begin by explaining the history of migrations and by italian courses so as to make the contact easier with the italian community. These will lead us to travel to Italy to visit the original region of our grand-parents.
Thanks to a training in the realisation of films, we will handle the whole production of the documentary with a maximum autonomy. The project will be end with the broadcasting of the film and the implementation of a town twinning that will implicate a maximum of inhabitants. We wil probably welcome our italian new friends at this moment and make them visit our area. We will be helped in our work by competent contributors: VZW ReForm to supervise the project and VZW ACMJ for audiovisual training. A cultural operator will help the group in Italy.
The autonomy and cooperation will be encouraged during all parts of the project. The documentary will be a great tool for the cultural european openness and could be used by several people. It will be an important testimony for multiculturality and respect of the Other.
The twinning will be possible after the project and will certainly last for long years by creating real european relationships.
