Project Summary

Many young Europeans engage themselves in charity work or service overseas to help disadvantaged people from developing countries. More often than not there is no underlying fundamental discussion about development cooperation and as a result the stereotypes we have are perpetuated.

Within the framework of the project “LERNEN HELFEN LERNEN”, materials have been developed on the questions currently facing international development cooperation. They will be uploaded onto a website for anyone to use free of charge. They contain draft lectures and workshop concepts for schools, as well as analogue and web-based preparatory training for prospective volunteers. Additional materials such as short films and a touring exhibition will also be produced for the general public. All products are being developed to correspond to a high creative standard and to include the latest technology.

The project was undertaken by the following five organizations: Verein Kipu and Kunstverein Schichtwechsel from Liechtenstein, oew – Organisation für Eine solidarische Welt from Italy, Sterne auf den Straßen Boliviens from Germany and Estrellas en la Calle from Bolivia. Kunstverein Schichtwechsel was in charge of the attractive design of the materials while the other four organizations were responsible for the development of the contents.

The materials primarily address organizations involved with development cooperation, but they can also be used by schools or other interested parties. The goal is to work towards an understanding for global interdependence, tackling inter-cultural challenges as well as the functionality in development cooperation. Hands-on learning resources are being readied for this purpose, which will enable young people to take reflective action based on solidarity. The skills which they will acquire by using these resources could be useful not just for their future experience abroad, but also for their future career. All materials are available in German and English.
