Project Summary

The life of modern teenagers is influenced by strikingly excessive consumption of digital media, which leads to significant reduction of physical activity. This can lead to health problems, such as low immunity and overweight. The project “Let’s get active together” is based on the development of selected key competences, which help to adopt a prospective healthy lifestyle of the 12 to 16-year old teenagers. Working on the development of the subject-specific and methodological goals will change the daily routine, which will involve more physical activity and clever multimedia usage. The didactic framework will be set using exercise and active games. The main objective of the project is for students to integrate more sports activities in their everyday life. They will meanwhile gain new perspectives on different types of sports, typical for their countries. Ten participants are going to meet a group of foreign peers and share the experience of sports activities, which they will undertake once they’ve met in person.

The daily school routine as well as the free time of the students will be redefined by spending it actively and usefully. At the beginning they will start a blog about school sports so that it can be shared with new friends on Etwinning, which will be used as a save platform for sharing the content throughout the project. The students will also use it to prepare themselves for the encounter. They will make videos and create the project logo. The main objective here is to develop the intercultural communicative competence. The students act as cultural mediators between the own and the foreign culture.

The teenagers will work on uploading the shared content on the mutually created website. They will hypothesize about the everyday life of their peers abroad (sketches or posters). These assumptions can either be disproved or accepted, which will confront the participants with the topic of rejecting the stereotypes and seeing them critically. This experience develops the students’ ability to act and communicate. They make progress in media literacy by presenting and publishing the results of the project. Another goal is to apply the acquired language and act self-confidently in intercultural situations. Ideally, a sense of cultural identity of the students will be developed by means of intercultural encounters during the online etwinning project.

All the sports and other activities will take place during the first meeting, such as: app controlled hiking rally in Tallinn’s oldtown using step counter or in Ostpark Rüsselsheim with the methodology of competition-based groupwork; participation in PE classes at school; ethnologic open-air museum in Tallinn: the topic of daily exercise of our ancestors, methodology used is hiking in groups and panel discussion afterwards; Capoiera and beach volleyball workshops with professional guides; “Fit in Frankfurt” bike competition using smartphone for navigation and distance tracker; sports tournament: teachers vs. students with step counters; slackline workshop, webdesign, IT basics, multimedia editing of photos and videos, chat communication, file download/upload.

There will be provided a public access to the entire project documentation for interested individuals but also potential new school partners. All the images and videos will be edited by students and uploaded online. We are aiming at implementing long-term after-school activities and school clubs in PE by the end the project. Several media components will also hopefully become a part of the school electives. Ideally, some of the project contents will be introduced into certain areas of the school curriculum. Generally, the project aims at positive long-term effects in the future private life of the teenagers, in particular, using of smartphones and other gadgets appropriately and preferring a healthy lifestyle.
