Project Summary
The “Let’s Trek on Europe’s Tracks” project brings together 5 schools (France, Spain, Croatia, United Kingdom, Norway) around the topic of mountains.
140 students (28 in each school) from 12 to 15 years old, combining the contribution of their usual school subjects and their personal and collective work, will approach the theme from 4 points of view :
– the formation of mountains – geological, geographical approach
– the mountain ecosystem and its recent evolutions – awareness of environmental issues
– safety in moutains – orientation, first aid, etc.
– human activity in the mountains – history, geography, economy, tourism
They will report on their progress during each 5 days mobility to contribute to the final production of a hiking guide gathering knowledge structured according to these 4 themes and several hiking routes.
In addition, travelling abroad will be an opportunity for students and teachers to really experience the mountain environment though various location-specific physical activities (skiing, snowshoeing, via ferrata, orienteering and mainly hiking ).
Approximately 25 teachers (3 to 6 per institution) will be involved in a professional development process and will participate 4 times, alongside student exchanges (same place, same date, teachers being sometimes accompanying, sometimes training), in training events to improve their reflective practice. The teacher training activities will be between 1 day and 2.5 days out of the total 5 days of mobility. They will benefit from a 4-stage training process concerning the themes of :
– the international comparison of education systems
– assessment of student achievement
– the consideration of special needs students
– educational innovations.
The guide produced by the students, in written form, but illustrated with photos and videos, will be published online on the eTwinning platform. In addition, teachers will collectively report back to their respective local education authorities at the end of the project.
In addition to the final production of the guide by the pupils and the report by the teachers, the expected results are for all the structures the achievement of the 3 objectives of the project below, following on from the 7th horizontal priority of the Erasmus + program: Social value and educational heritage of Europe.
1) Skills: Use physical activities and project development to enhance students’ self-esteem and self-confidence, through the development of their skills, particularly transversal skills: taking responsibility, initiative autonomy; and their language skills.
2) European belonging: Fostering the development of European culture through the emergence of solidarity and collaboration between students of different nationalities during physical activities in a natural environment, and through the sharing of a common natural and environmental heritage.
3) The reflexive teacher: To improve, thanks to the international comparison, the reflection of the teachers on the organization of their school, the education system in a general way, their practices of teaching and evaluation, and thus to boost their career and school.
The impact of this project on students, beyond direct repercussions of cultural openness and language skills, also lies indirectly in the qualitative evolution of the pedagogy they benefit from, and in the long-term in the widening of their range of opportunities in their academic path, personnal and professionnal life in adulthood.
