Project Summary

Teachers of all five schools from Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece and The Netherlands notice various problems of their students concerning the topic reading: especially an increasing lack of reading skills and missing motivation for reading texts and novels. Four of the respective schools do not even have their own school library. As reading skills belong to the basic skills we want to foster this topic and therefore develop the project LIFE: LIterature For Everyone. Approximately 25 teachers and 200 students will take part in the TTLs. More staff members, students and parents will participate in LIFE at each school. The target group of students is 13/14 years old.

Our aims are: increased motivation to deal with texts and literature, broad knowledge about authors and texts from the own and partner´s countries, developing reading competence and skills, developing English language, ICT and presentation skills as well as intercultural skills.
To reach these aims we want to share our experience, train our students´ reading skills, read texts together and prepare presentations, foster the use of ICT, create audio versions and podcasts of short texts and finally do a cinematization of a novel. Students work on specific topics during classes and in additional project groups. All results are shared at the TTLs and in the twinspace. As a result students will also gain self-confidence, intercultural communication skills and improve their fluency in the use of English as our project language. The production of audio and movie versions will be done in mixed international groups. The project itself is based on a two level approach to the topic: Year one will concentrate especially on skill training. In year two we want to foster the use of these skills and produce a common cinematization.

The following results are expected: tangible results as book “treasure troves” filled with book recommendations of all partners, ready-to-use-materials for classes, podcasts, audio and movie versions of texts to be used in classes, brochures with fairy tales and sagas. Other results will be increased knowledge and skills (reading competence, knowledge of authors, texts, insight in foreign culture,…) as well as increased linguistic competence and an enhanced motivation to read and work with texts using various methods.

Long- and medium-term benefits of LIFE will be:
For participating students and staff members: increased motivation to read, improved basic skills (reading, foreign language, ICT) and broadened knowledge concerning our European cultural heritage, enlarged skills of the school´s staff (ICT, project management, intercultural communication skills, enlarged professional competence),
For the respective organisation: schools will be more open-minded concerning Europe, strengthening of each school´s profile, ongoing and then established activities such as reading competitions/ participation at reading events in neighbour schools/old-people´s home/classes with younger students, established cooperation with local libraries, ongoing invitation of local authors to school, increased co-operation with external partners (e.g. Stadttheater Ingolstadt, Baltic Media School, Liperi municipality, Digital Playground ).

To disseminate the results we want to use a variety of possibilities, e.g. the film will be submitted to film festivals (amongst others in Rotterdam and in Greece), we are going to have a project webpage which will be linked to all school´s webpages, we want to create etwinning kits and podcasts and the project and its results will be presented at school development fairs in all respective countries.
