Project Summary
The project “Youth Lifestyles, Deviance and Prevention” brought together five experienced European partners from Slovakia, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, UK who operate in very different contexts, but all engaged in educational actions aiming to prevent deviance, unhealthy lifestyles harmful for social relations and the physical and mental health of young people. All partners in this project are developing their activities in the field of Non-Formal Education and are part of Inter-sectoral and Interdisciplinary Working Groups that contribute to the shaping of Youth Policies at local and/or National level. The aims of this initiative was to analyse and understand better the pedagogical value and effectiveness of non-formal education and its “political” dimension. This project provided a better understanding of how the Ngo’s, civil society, Local Authorities and Institutions can work together to put in practice preventive measures to tackle serious problems that affect young people with fewer opportunities.
The objective of this project was to highlight the experiences and expertise acquired by partners in the development of the most effective prevention measures in specific contexts and to provide practical tools to the participants that will take on a multiplier role in their own contexts. This project was also a remarkable opportunity to shape some standard TCs specifically addressed to professional engaged in prevention field and for the promotion of healthy lifestyles. The principles underlying this project – conceived as a mosaic of different themes/problems, contexts, experiences, and prevention strategies – were those of diversity and complementarity. The project lasted 20 months and was addressed to participants working on youth field such as educators/street workers, heads/coordinators of youth centers, trainers, teachers, active members of youth associations, young people involved in Peer Education programs and participants somehow engaged in Youth Policy field and inter-sectoral working groups (policy makers, pedagogues, social workers, heads of services, coordinators of educational campaigns, representatives of institutions and NGOs). This project consisted of:
Transnational meeting (Kosice – set-up of the project) and 5 other international meetings, each of which was characterized by a theme/problem and specific preventive measures
LTTA in Almere (The Netherlands): Confrontations between ethnic groups of youngsters in the marginal neighborhoods of big cities; great phenomenon of youth delinquency, the educational action of street educators in the management of conflicts between rival ethnic gangs
LTTA in Stara Lubovna (Slovakia), TC focused on prevention of various forms of Addiction (alcohol, tobacco, drugs)
LTTA in London (UK), Cyber-bulling, online addictions, adolescents’ Suicides and Road Safety (youth driving style)
Multiplier: Conference in Timisoara (RO). Objectives: to give visibility to our learning process and present the Handbook as the output of our two-year work. FITT had also presented its work focused on fighting among adolescent, Nutritional Disorders (obesity, bulimia, anorexia) and educational actions to tackle Unwanted Motherhood phenomenon in the framework of the EU-funded Educational Campaign “Check-Out the Neighborhood”.
Transnational meeting in Potenza (Italy), double content: the first part was dedicated to the Intellectual Output, to make the Handbook resulting from the project ready to be distributed to the networks of which the partners of this project are members, to Local Authorities, NGOs, Institutions that have in some way contributed to the realisation of this project. In the 2nd part EURONET presented its work on preventing school drop out/push out and the fighting against the NEETS phenomenon and Illegality”.
Results:Exchange of good practices: the sharing of experiences in specific areas of prevention through visits to projects, meetings with experts, acquisition of new competences, widening and more effective educational actions. To compare structural/organizational aspects of partner organizations, how the local networks they belong to work, how structured the dialogue and cooperation with Local Authorities is
The development of “standard Training Courses” focusing on prevention and the proposal of healthy lifestyles based on Non-Formal Education methods and aimed at all those (educators, facilitators, heads of youth centres, teachers, social workers, group leaders) who work with young people (especially teenagers, adolescents) and who will play a multiplier role in the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
The HANDBOOK (Intellectual Output) condenses some of the most significant approaches, working methods and practical tools, essentially based on Non-Formal Education principles, used by the five European partners in the field of prevention to youth deviance. This work is aimed at all those who work with disadvantaged young people to promote healthy lifestyles.
