Project Summary

In January 2016 we began the Erasmus+ project ‘Human Rights in a European Community of Values’ (HUMREV) under the Action 2 (KA2 201).

The project is a reflection on the current situation of Human Rights within the framework of the European Community and conforms to the challenges proposed by the different European agendas and initiatives under the structure of the 2020 Agenda. In our job as educators, we understand that it is the ultimate objective of the educational systems to train its citizens in the values which are linked to the dignity of a human being. The European Community promotes the identification of such values through the study and cooperation amongst its members. Within the framework of the ERASMUS+ programme KA2 201, HUMREV has been an observatory designed for that purpose.

OBJECTIVES:
1. Promotion of democratic values, social cohesion, active citizenship and intercultural dialogue, which frame the four objectives of the ET 2020 Strategy.
2. To integrate the priorities of the 2020 Europe Agenda into an educational context; “to guarantee cohesion, social and territorial” as well as “to promote quality, social cohesion and active citizenship.”
3. The priority area of action of the Renewed Social Agenda completes the Lisbon Strategy for the European Commission period of 2008-2010.

NUMBER AND PROFILE OF THE PARTICIPATING ORGANISATIONS:

Our European partners have brought knowledge and experience to the project. Gymnasium in der Taus, Backnang (Germany), recognised as a school without racism; IIS Guido Monaco Di Pomposa, Codigoro ( Italy), providing students with immersive experience of work after academia; Limingan Lukio, Liminka Secondary School( Finland), reflecting an excellent educational system of the country and very interested in the study of minorities; Gimnazjum Nr 21, Gorzow( Poland), which has provided its experience on religious tolerance; and the University of Alicante that brings prestige, relevance, experience and impact to the project. IES Cabo de la Huerta in Alicante has provided its ability of leadership and commitment to the entire educational community.

DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT:

All of the centres have followed the same dynamics in tackling the achievement of the activities. This dynamic was organised in different levels of action:

• Firstly, the long-distance named activities have been developed, which are specified in the celebration of the H Days, and other activities related to the right to education and freedom of expression.
• Secondly, the activities that are related to a specific right have been addressed in each visit throughout each quarter.
• There have also been several sessions of E-Twinning between partner centres with projects relative to the practiced rights.

RESULTS AND IMPACT ACHIEVED:

Under the general formulation of Human Rights, we have implemented a dual methodology that helped to REINFORCE values, such as, freedom, solidarity, equality, tolerance, active citizenship and a democratic culture. During this time, they DEVELOPED basic competencies, such as social, linguistic and digital skills. The main objective was to promote a change in the perception of values related to Human Rights in the educational community.

Change in intercultural perception:

• Educational portal Humrev.org used to accommodate all the material generated during the development of the project.
• E-Twinning: Two projects related to environmental issues have been developed.
• A NOMADS documentary that represents a reflection on the situation of migrants in Europe from their experiences.

Change in intracultural perception:

• Methodological Guide for the creation of a protective environment for the rights of the child. University of Alicante, Spain. ISBN 978-84-1672481-9.
• Series of conferences on educational content developed in Liminka Lukio with the collaboration of the University of Oulu.

LONG TERM BENEFITS:

The titled ‘HUMREV MANIFESTO’ summarises the objective routes of this project. The identification of values that forms Human Rights opened a broad discourse to undertake the other values that make up human relations. Creating awareness and promoting changes in the perception of the problems is, in itself, a long-term benefit. On the other hand, through various intellectual products, the educational community also provides ways and ideas for intervention. Each of these products made in our project has its own benefits which are observed in our pupils, who will be gathered amongst a more just, participatory society, and ultimately, more democratic. The model is reproducible, with only the need to extend it.
