Project Summary
In 2003, an international survey that evaluated the 4th and 8th grade students’ success in Maths, using standard tests, in 46 countries, has shown that the average success of the students is under 50%. Traditional methods and students’ fear from Maths have imprisoned Maths teaching into a vicious circus. For many students, Maths is too difficult to understand and boring. We have felt a need to prepare this project in order to increase students’ low Maths skills, save them from anxiety and fear from Maths, make Maths more enjoyable and understandable and make teachers produce different approaches and develop their skills in profession.
Our aims are:
-to encourage cooperation and unity of teachers for Maths, to ease exchange of information and experience,
-to glamorize Maths making it more exciting, funnier and more creative instead of being a nightmare for students,
-to increase students’ interest for Maths and develop the 21st century Maths skills by means of art, food, music, life and caricature,
-to integrate interdisciplinary teaching methods and techniques into the curriculum and develop them in the following years,
-to get rid of learning obstacles of low-successful students, remove their anxiety and fear,
-to provoke students’ spirit of curiosity and explorer by showing them the relation between Maths and the real life, to prepare them to rival in global economy,
-to prompt teachers to use creative methods and techniques and to produce materials,
-to share our project results with our colleagues by the way of local seminars and internet network, and to enable them to be used.
From each country, 3 people will attend Learning, teaching, traning activities., the total number will be 90. Attendants are Maths and English teachers who are open to innovation and development. Our activities are focused on provoking teachers for creativity and being innovative and moving students away from Maths fear by adding food, caricature, life, games and music into Maths. Our activities are preparing materials that will lead us to our aims, preparing an education kit for tesachers, preparing Maths magazine for students and organising a Maths fair to introduce the productions. We will actualize these activities by some methodologies such as interdisciplinary approach, workshop, using ICT tools, cooperation, designing, creative and critical thinking and online communication. In this project, teachers will exchange professional knowledge and be more outfitted by having cooperation and net among themselves, Teachers will develop a researcher identity for themselves in order to inoculate the 21st century Maths skills to the students, Teachers will gain the skill of producing new materials, develop and use them in order to increase their students’ motivation and to decrease their fear and anxiety from Maths, Teacher will have richer teaching methods and material repertoire by partnership, Teachers will discover each other’s culture and develop the feeling of tolerance for other cultures, The feeling of anxiety, fear and failure for Maths of students will be broken down, Students’ interest and motivation in Maths will increase and learning obstacles will disappear, Students will gain self-confidence to go on with the following education steps.Participants will use their European colleagues’ experience and develop themselves better. Sharing good practices will encourage teachers to think in a wider perspective and give them opportunity to develop ideas about how to adapt different practices into their own conditions. Attendants will not only develop professional skills but also will have a chance to discover different cultures and take place in the same activities with partners. This project is about developing Maths skills and teacher profile. If students have trouble in Maths in the first years of their school life, a kind of anxiety about Maths occurs for them.Maths fear, failure and anxiety reflect in the following steps of their school life and always result in failure. The products of our project appeal to this kind of students.Maths teachers can always use innovative materials and multidisciplinary methods that we have developed in their curriculum and they can develop them. Thus; students’ fear and anxiety about Maths will decrease and positive approach development will exist. Because our sources will be useful, developable and sustainable.
By tmeans of this project; students’, whose Maths performance is low, main Maths skills will develop, they will get rid of Maths fear and anxiety, go to the next education step with self-confidence and they will desire to continue their education till the end. Teachers will learn innovative, creative and multidisciplinary approaches and strategies, they will be able to cope with problems, they will always want to develop, and also they will gain some professional skills such as cooperation, infornation and skills exchange, etc.
