Project Summary
The change from an industrial- to a digital society has been very rapid. With it comes a change in the everyday life, may it be private, job or education. Especially schools have always been very slow to adapt to new kinds of societies. And this time it is no different, with the exception that the change is a lot faster than in other instances. Governments in different European countries have been more or less quick to adapt. Many Scandinavian countries have implemented digital competences in their curriculum in the early years of this century. Germany finalized this a decade later. In the last 10 years, digital mobile devices have become a very important part of our student’s lives and in some schools a part of teaching. With it come many different tools that teachers can use in the classroom. But there are common challenges all participating partners face. First of all, there is a lack of digital competence by the teachers in using those tools in the classroom, which creates a huge gap between teachers and learners. But most importantly, even if tools are used in the classroom, they are often used as a means, the use is used as a learning goal and they are used to spark motivation. However, this is neither long-lasting nor good teaching practice. In consequence, this project will for one thing develop skills supporting the use of digital technologies in schools and furthermore develop innovative digital practices combining digital competences with subject-related competences to form a meaningful and lasting digital pedagogy. The digital society is more or less the same in all participating countries, so it makes sense to work together for a European approach.
The aim of the project “Making Technology Meaningful” was to develop lesson plans and guidelines for supporting the meaningful use of digital technologies in schools. By the end of the project, we were able to deliver a complete set of innovative digital practices combining digital competences with subject-related competences to form a meaningful and lasting digital pedagogy. All this is gathered on the project website https://digitalpedagogy.school/ The basis of digital pedagogy is established on the practical experiences that are complemented by the pedagogical theories about metacognition, reflection, and lesson structuring. The process supports teachers’ professional development through reflection, improvement of their teaching practices in an innovative manner, and developing their own digital competences.
Throughout the project, teachers used a systematic structure (see https://digitalpedagogy.school/lessons-structure/) for implementing their own digital pedagogy. They created lesson plans and applied them in a school situation. The participant teachers taught in the age group 10–12 years.
