Project Summary
“MATH 3.0 Amazing Trip through History ” is a completed project realised with 3 upper- secondary schools from Poland, Iceland and France. We took advantage of history of mathematics to make our subject more humanistic, understandable and interesting. The 3.0 means that we combined it with innovative, modern digital tools to link the past with the future. It was a good idea which gave us a huge space to colaborate in the creative way with mathematical content. According to assumptions we started with the world of numbers. From the beginning of December to the end of May we have been counting. We were watching the process of evolution of numbers and tools through such activities like: presentations of pupil’s favourite numbers with use of Augmented Reality or Google tools, preparing exhibition of counting tools, bilateral matches in counting on Soroban, slide rule and calculator between schools with use of videoconference – etwinning tool, exchange of videos from lessons made in 360 technology, outdoor games with use of GPS like geocaching or treasure hunting with use of Android aplications. Next step was dedicated to Geometry. This period of cooperation was leaded by Icelandic school. As an warming up activity we worked on cult film “Flatland”.The next activity was to present the most interesting solids with use of ShetchUp or Tincercad. In that way we prepared a sort of virtual exhibition of solids. We also built solids in reality: from paper without glue, from plastic sticks or blocks and analyzed Platon solids. We cooperated in international teams to solve mathemathical problems, looking for treasure on Hafnafjordur streets and preparing dramatic scenes to develope our communication skills.
Except of the educational values concerned with Maths and ICT there were other advantages of our project such as european culture awarness. We have known each other traditions and values, sense of humour and the way of life. It is something that can not be overestimated.
The last period ended in France. It was full of colaborative activities like preparing scenes from famous matematicians’ life, filling mathematical cards, building puppets and preparing short spectacles with use of them, treasure hunting in Charleville-Mezieres, quiz about Europe and building time-line with use of Augmented Reality. In result of that the exhibition about the most famous matematicians and their discoveries was established in the coridor of Lycée François Bazin.
To replace the main results we have to start with the material onces: cameras in 360 technology, and Cardboards for pupils, blocks for building solids, tools for counting (among them there are some made by pupils), three mobile exhibitions (counting tools in Swarzędz, solids in Hafnafjordur, Time-line in Charleville-Mezieres). The most important results can be seen as “the know how” to use the modern tools to make Math more interesting, modern and creative and to make it more humanistic and understandable in result of using the historical context. The other impact depends on the development of conversation and cooperation skills of all participants of the project which was underlined in evaluation sheets by all participants.
We are sure that especially the last results will change to longer-term benefits.
