Project Summary
The aim of the project “Meeting Cultures Beyond Stereotypes” gives our students the opportunity of crossing borders from one county to another and defeating the creation of the various stereotypes throughout Europe. The project will last 24 months and it will involve 4 different partner schools. The co-ordinating school of the project is a secondary school, “Liceo Galilieo Ferraris” situated in the city of Taranto, in the region called Puglia in the south of Italy. Our city is in a marvellous geographical position right in the heart of the gulf of Taranto famous for its deep blue crystal clear water. One of the most important environmental issues facing our city is industrial pollution mainly due to the huge steel factory called “Ilva” and, unfortunately, a lack of job opportunities. Thanks to previous collaborations such as E-twinning and job shadowing among teachers, the Liceo “Ferraris” has decided to take up the challenge of a long and intense path with 3 other partner schools: one in Denmark, one in Spain and one in Greece and this will be full of opportunities for comparing with each other and getting to know each other better as well. The students are aged between 15 and 18; mobility is allowed for only up to 5 students for every school even though the total number of participants included in the project is much higher. Each school can, through its own students, provide extra valuable contributions to each activity even from a distance. The origins of this project is mainly due to the huge efforts of collaboration and cooperation among the four partners. The objectives of the project are: students will be much more aware of diversity, and the most important thing of all, is that they will be able to welcome diversity as there are many issues regarding intolerance today and people not being able to accept diversity in all its different forms and shapes as diversity heightens our inner fears of comparing ourselves to others; students will be able to understand each other, compare themselves to others, and better themselves through virtual and face to face debates; students will be able to create and shape products which are culturally and socially useful so as to stimulate reflection with regard to the whole school community; students will be able to take advantage of a real life, unique and unrepeatable experience in order to become aware of the main theme of the project, to develop social dialogue and develop a very important theme in the project, inclusion. Airing opinions and points of view will take place through debates, discussions on forums, exchange of material for instance articles, poems, films, pictures, advertisements, post, memes, all of which will be authentic material close to the world of digital natives; students will be able to interact with each other using English as the principal means of communication and they will be able to introduce themselves, collaborate and co-operate using didactic methodologies such as cooperative learning, role play in order to complete a given task, peer tutoring so that they can help and support each other in difficult situations. These methodologies will be enhanced by the use of new technologies such as smartphones, apps, tablets, computers, projectors, social networks like facebook, Instagram throughout the entire project. The E-twinning platform and other various applications will enable them to vote, provide feedback, create graphs, pie charts and statistics on the basis of the data they collected for example Tricider.com, Mentimeter.com. The heart of the project will focus mainly on 3 works produced by transnational groups (one or more students each partner school who work togheter, not to compete but to cooperate) of students who will cooperate and collaborate together in order to obtain results and achieve common objectives. The 3 works will focus on: the organization of a photo contest which will vote for the most significant and the best photo in portraying the theme of stereotypes; the production of an advertisement which will induce them to get closer to the theme of diversity as a way of enriching each other; the creation of a comic strip developed entirely by the students who will choose the main character of their story, the setting and the message they intend to convey. On completion of all the on line and face to face assigned activities carried out by the students in the countries involved, there will be a ceremony “Meeting Cultures Beyond Stereotypes” held in Denmark to reward the works produced by the transnational groups. A real and proper ceremony will be set up with a jury which will have to declare the most significant work submitted. The impact of the entire project will have repercussions on how to interpret diversity on behalf of students and everyone else as well. It will help them acquire a greater resposnsible citizenship and enable them to share their common values and their civic engagement.
