Project Summary
To reach beyond barriers and borders, such is the philosophy of project #Mémoire(s).
To remove such barriers, be they geographic or transnational borders, one of culture, language or class, through an interdisciplinary transversality of skills, the production of multiple supports and resources, the borders of our own memories.
#Mémoire(s) A hashtag, a symbol of innovation, of “trace”, of transmission and of network. Parentheses, the marks of diversity and of union.
#Mémoire(s) is a 2015-2018 Erasmus + school to school strategic partnership between six European schools :
– FRANCE, collège and lycée Fénelon, Clermont-Ferrand, project coordinator ;
– GERMANY, lycée (specialisation in languages) Karlsgymnasium, Munich ;
– SPAIN, Instituto de Ensino Secundario (secondary and professionnal education), Tomiño ;
– GREECE, Music School of Kavala (collège and lycée with specialisation in music), Kavala ;
– ITALY, lycée Virgilio, Pouzzoles ;
– PORTUGAL, Agrupamento de Escolas (secondary and professionnal education), Valongo.
The goal of the project was to sensitize 12-18 year old pupils to the issue of memorial questions, make them tell about their past, assert their European identity, sharpen their critical skills and share a common future.
With this in mind, the project offered pedagogical activities which mainly focused on the discovery of individual memory (intergenerational inheritance) leading to more challenging questions about collective memory (European legacy and heritage). Each activity led to the production of pedagogical material made by the pupils themselves.
The project also allowed the development of a common set of basic and transversal skills, such as the practice of French (language used in the project) and of the other languages of the partnership; the development of entrepreneurial spirit ; autonomy and initiative (project-oriented teaching, responsible involvement of the pupils in various tasks/ activities) , creativity, as well as the mastering common information and communication technologies (Multimedia productions, virtual classrooms).
Six transnational meetings were planned so as to ensure the proper management of the project and the implementation of learning activities, in close relation with the school’s and the host country’s specificity, as well as a cultural immersion with a family for the pupils involved.
#Mémoire(s) has also been a powerful lever for innovative practice for teachers, by their new engagement within a scientific community of international importance (participation at seminars, study days, scientific publications); by the establishment of pressure groups for innovation and pedagogical experimentation within the schools: and by the creation of a think-tank on oral history and, in turn, it’s recognition by the organisation International Oral History Association.
In order to ensure its implementation and its promotion, the partnership used tools made available by Europe such as eTwinning or the certificate Europass. In addition to this it has succeeded in developing a durable network by tapping into local expertise and the support of other pertinent third parties.
Finally, in respect of a quality approach, regular assessments were carried out to measure the impact of the project on its targeted public. The studies revealed a positive response: as much in the level of motivation from the participants for their work, their learning of foreign languages, their readiness to move and meet people, as by the improvements to their knowledge of european cultures and memories. So too for the teachers and educators who, above all, spoke of their improved competence in project management and professional good practice. Lastly, we continue to see concrete benefits for the structures, benefits obtained through the reinforcement of partnerships, the opening of different spectrums on the outside world and the creation of true communities.
The final production has concluded with the development of a European platform of pooling and sharing open educational resources on the website www.erasmusplus.memoires.eu, a unique access to the various learning materials produced during the project and to any other educational resources produced in Europe. This databank pursues the idea of inheritance, of ‘trace’ in the existing European places of memory dedicated to education.
