Project Summary

Taking into account the profound social changes caused by the Covid pandemic19 and following a necessary discussion and deepening on the consequences that social distancing has determined in society and in particular on young people at risk of marginalization, the partnership intended to adapt the project “Music In” presented in May 2020, building on emerging and related new needs, in particular, the need to rethink the ways in which learning pathways and non-formal and informal education practices can be pursued with more marginalised young people using new digital tools. The project is born from the awareness of the inclusive, educational and cultural power of the music and the will to share and experiment skills and innovative techniques developed by youth workers from different countries who work in disadvantaged environments and use art and creativity as a form of participation and inclusion. The countries involved (Italy, Spain and Portugal) have a strong background on these issues and want to promote community music techniques, an educational practice that uses music as a means to increase self-knowledge and improve openness to others, through a participatory and coordinated production within a group. The project is based on the logic of the Magic Triangle: research union, training, practices. Central characteristics of the partnership are: intersectionality, ensured by a network of actors active in the field of formal education (Universities and Conservatives) and other in the field of non-formal and informal (youth and cultural associations), the centrality of art and music and the expertise in the field of youth work. The common idea is to create a new educational methodology based on music to be used in non-formal contexts of various countries, drawing on the innovative practices experienced in the field of traditional training or youth work. The aim is to enhance the cultural impact of the Euro-Mediterranean basin, which sees music as the appropriate instrument to strengthen the socio-cultural identity of a community, as the music itself is considered a communicative language with educational potential that the project intends to deepen and demonstrate. General objectives of the project: to encourage the participation and inclusion of young people at risk of marginalisation through the dissemination of community music practices; to recognise the ability of youth workers to create inclusion through music practice and education, increasing public awareness of their central role; recognising the central value of music as an expression of Europe’s cultural heritage. Specific objectives: to experiment and share innovative educational approaches based on an inclusive logic, starting from the principles of community music; to strengthen the digital skills of youth workers; implement a new educational methodology that represents an innovative educational model that can be internationalized. The project involves 18 Youth workers from Italy, Spain and Portugal working in remote and critical areas in contact with disadvantaged youth groups – with economic and social problems or with groups coming from fringe neighborhoods – using music and creativity to foster social inclusion. The activities include: 2 mobility, one in Italy and one in Portugal for the training of youth workers and the testing of the new methodology; 2 Transnational Meetings in Spain and Italy; realization of 3 Intellectual Outputs; 3 Multiplier Events, for the dissemination of project results. Youth workers will also be trained through peer-to-peer and learning by doing activities using inclusive methodologies such as: body percussion, music therapy – Orff and experiential and sensory workshops. The 3 expected intellectual outputs are: an operational guide of the educational methodology developed during the project with the contribution of all partners; a platform with interactive geo-referenced map, made in open source mode, containing the guide and the multimedia content produced during the project activities, to offer concrete examples of the methodology developed and to allow other youth workers to use it in different contexts by joining the international network of ‘Music in’, thereby increasing the social impact of the whole project; guidelines for the recognition of credits to youth workers in the field of music.
