Project Summary
Our project is called `My Kiez – Your Kiez´. The idea developed during a meeting of both participating schools on an Erasmus-advanced training. In that advanced training the pedagogues from Germany and France were brought together. Both participating schools root in a multicultural students background, of which most have an non-european background. This was the reason why both schools were always trying to build an understanding fort he European Union and maybe identify with it in the best case. This project enabled the children to experience a different European culture and developing a tolerance and interest towards as a consequence. The students learned to accept other ways of living, to be open for it and to widen their horizon.
The project expanded the media competence in an ongoing digitized world and connected to the Lifeworld of the Digital Natives. The plan to upload and present the by the students collected and and developed informations on eTwinning as a Dropbox in order to comment directly there, could not be fulfilled due to the different requirements. During the 2-hours-lasting school club a digital dictionary was created with the help of audio- and videosnippets. The free apps `book creator`, `moviemaker` and `Thinglink` could be used herefore. The project aimed to promote English as a foreign language and thus also to develop multilingualism. Through the problem-solving-oriented handling in unfamiliar situations, an additional key competence was acquired or strengthened. The pupils developed a knowledge in both verbal and non-verbal communication. The linguistic difficulties that arose caused the students to reach their limits. As part of the working group (AG), many situations were played through in role plays, which ensured a relaxed process in the corresponding situations.
The workshop on intercultural communication carried out together with the partner school was very helpful. The project was set up over two years with a one-year cycle. Due to the Covid pandemic and the associated logdown, the last six months could not be carried out as planned unfortunately.
In principle, everyone could take part in the AG and thus in the exchange. An in-school “application process”, which highlighted the students with intrinsic motivation, was required. Due to the travel places requested, the group was limited to 20 students.
The students were accompanied by 4 teachers. During the working group time, the groups dealt with their own (school) environment and the Reichenberger Kiez and created a virtual Kiez-city-map with the help of suitable apps, which highlighted their own interests and important places in the neighborhood. The students conducted interviews with parents, teachers and supervisors of the school, filmed their school environment and their neighborhood and cut them into short sequences. An interactive photo book with small information about the location was created and served as a basis for reflection afterwards. During a mutual visit, the different places were visited and got to know together. The children created a ranking of the places they visited and gave their opinion. In addition, they acted as guides for the others.
Furthermore, a paper chase (rallye) through the neighborhood was jointly developed, prepared and carried out as part of the AG. The cultural diversity was analyzed, reflected on and taken into account.
The city map and the rally of your own neighborhood were originally intended to be part of the 3rd / 4th class. As well as the geography lessons of the 5th / 6th Classes can be used for learning, as the subject of Berlin and map reading is an integral part of the curriculum. In the form of a large wall district plan, a school-wide project should be created for both classes and years, which should involve the non-participating students. Due to the theft of the tablets and the associated loss of digital documents, this project can only be implemented on a small scale.
By publishing the student reports and results on the Facebook page and in the school’s internal committees, as well as by displaying current activities in the school showcase, the staff, parents and the school environment were also kept up to date.
Due to the sustainability of the offers, the children developed into experts in their own neighborhood. This knowledge as well as the materials of the maps and the city rallies and the photos can be used and further developed in further projects in European exchange. Also in terms of how far the neighborhood and the city will change over the next few years.
