Project Summary

The basis of the partnership of 5 comprehensive high schools from Poland, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Hungary was practical knowledge and active learning to acquire new skills, gain essential experience and form expected social and civic attitudes. In the name of multilingualism, project participants worked in German and English. The project lasted 2 years and was carried out on 2 levels.
The aim of students’ projects (level 1) was to make students aware of the existence of global occurrences and correlations connecting people and preparing them for facing current challenges of humanity. Overcoming cultural and social differences, students co-participated in building an intercultural dialogue about global problems of the 21st century and their worldwide solutions. They familiarized themselves with the activity of organizations and institutions of the partner countries engaged in the realization of Sustainable Development Goals 2015-2030. Local problems connected with education and the job market (1), health service and poverty (2) was examined in comparison to the situation in countries of the Global South. Discussing natural threats (3) and the refugee crisis in Europe (4), we defined the reasons and results of these occurrences, and also tried to find effective methods of preventing them. Based on examples of good practice, we showed that, despite economic and social differences, global partnership in the field of sustainable development is possible, and that cultural diversity (5) is the world’s affluence. Articles and comments in Twinspace became the basis of 2 consecutive editions of the international school magazine “Miteinander”, founded in a Comenius project 2013-2015. The culmination of each of the 5 realized subprojects was an information campaign prepared during the international meeting beginning a particular subproject. In accordance with synergy we prepared each campaign by cooperating jointly with teachers and students of partner schools and with the support of organizations or institutions dealing daily with the problems that a particular action concerns and invited to the cooperation by the school coordinating a given project. With our actions which each school carried out under the guidance of trained teachers in school and local communities, we joined in international initiatives of fighting poverty, sustainable development, environment protection, keeping peace and retaining cultural diversity. Scenarios of lessons and other activities carried out within the campaign were collected in a guidebook ”Global Education- how to teach?”. Through the 6th subproject “Active citizen of the world”, we made a summary of our 2-year work and defined social, civic and intercultural competences acquired during the project course.
Working out efficient strategies and effective techniques of work with students, leading to better mastering the essential competences- basic and cross-sectional on a high level, was an overriding aim of level 2 of the project. In the scope of implementing intercultural competences, considered as “key qualifications”, in didactic and educational programmes and in the scope of perfecting methods of work with students, an Intercultural Competence Curriculum was drawn up. It comprises a catalogue of intercultural competences, a questionnaire “My intercultural competences” and a guidebook for teachers who would like to develop these competences in their students. As carrying out international interdisciplinary projects and teaching multicultural groups requires professional staff, a huge emphasis was put on expanding the professional profile of participating teachers.
The process of communication and cooperation on the eTwinning was intensified during 5 international project meetings. The international coordinators’ meeting, students’ meeting (student exchange) and teachers’ meeting (training) were held simultaneously at a particular school, and some agenda items were shared. In the intercultural week-long classes, students and teachers learned and worked on the project together. For better mutual acquaintance and understanding, the crucial element were “milestones” in the history of the partner countries, which helped to explain the specificity of the society of each region.
Acquired knowledge, developed European awareness and readiness to engage in global solidarity, complemented by experience and acquired intercultural competences, create the good starting base for active cooperation in the international arena and joint building the world based on economic, social, ecological balance and on human rights. Educational materials drawn up within the project will be used during foreign language classes and for educational purposes, and they will also be made available to interested users. The project was the next step in spreading the idea of practical intercultural education at school.
